Christmas Day in London transformed into a scene of terror last year, as a driver deliberately used his car as a weapon, leaving a trail of devastation in the city’s West End.
Anthony Gilheaney, 30, fueled by alcohol and rage, struck five pedestrians in a series of targeted attacks. The prosecution alleges this wasn’t a random act, but a deliberate attempt to inflict harm, even to kill.
The night began after Gilheaney left a nightclub, already consumed by fury. His anger quickly escalated into violence, beginning with a racist confrontation on Archer Street and then shifting to what prosecutors believe were homophobic attacks on two men in Great Windmill Street.
By the time he reached Shaftesbury Avenue, witnesses described Gilheaney as completely out of control. He intentionally swerved across the road, aiming for anyone in his path, a chilling act of malice that would prove fatal.
Aidan Chapman, 25, bore the brunt of Gilheaney’s rage, suffering catastrophic brain damage. Despite desperate medical intervention, he tragically succumbed to his injuries days later, on New Year’s Eve.
The violence didn’t stop there. Before reaching Chapman, Gilheaney engaged in a series of escalating confrontations. He attacked a Sikh man, then reversed into an Uber driver’s car – twice – in a display of unrestrained aggression.
Dashcam footage captured the unfolding chaos, revealing Gilheaney’s relentless pursuit of conflict. He targeted a gay couple walking home from Midnight Mass, deliberately driving at them as they attempted to escape.
The impact on those caught in Gilheaney’s path was immense. Six people – five pedestrians and the Uber driver – required hospital treatment that night, their lives irrevocably altered.
Police eventually found Gilheaney passed out in a park, where he reportedly expressed remorse, claiming he was “sorry for everything” and “guilty.” However, when confronted with evidence, he later claimed to have no memory of the events.
Gilheaney now faces a litany of charges, including murder, attempted murder, and grievous bodily harm. The trial continues, as the court seeks to unravel the full extent of his actions and the motivations behind this horrific Christmas Day rampage.
