TILBROOK'S BATTLE: Can a Rock God Save London's Lost Pub?

TILBROOK'S BATTLE: Can a Rock God Save London's Lost Pub?

A beloved landmark in Charlton stands on the brink of vanishing forever, a victim of development and neglect. The White Swan, a Victorian pub with a rich history, abruptly closed its doors in early 2020, just as the world locked down, leaving a void in the heart of the community.

But a determined group refuses to let its memory fade. Spearheaded by Glenn Tilbrook, the acclaimed singer-songwriter of Squeeze, a new charity – White Swan Music and Arts – has launched a bold campaign to reclaim the pub and breathe new life into its walls.

The plan isn’t simply to reopen a pub; it’s to create a vibrant cultural hub. Imagine a space where local musicians can hone their craft, where young artists can experience the thrill of a live performance, and where the community can gather and connect.

Tilbrook’s connection to the cause is deeply personal. He vividly remembers the small pubs and venues where Squeeze first found its footing, places that nurtured their talent and provided a crucial launchpad for their career. He believes The White Swan can offer the same opportunity to a new generation.

He recalls a pivotal moment early in his career, a gig at the Morden Arms in Greenwich with Jools Holland. “It was great fun and helped us to find ourselves,” Tilbrook explains, emphasizing the vital role these intimate spaces play in an artist’s development.

The charity’s initial goal is to raise enough funds for a deposit, a crucial step in wresting the building from developers. To fuel this effort, they’ve launched a crowdfunding campaign, offering unique rewards to supporters.

Among the most enticing incentives is an exclusive, intimate VIP performance by Glenn Tilbrook himself. It’s a rare chance to see the legendary musician up close, in the kind of setting where his own musical journey began – a truly special experience for fans.

The campaign’s launch features a compelling video showcasing the community’s passion for the project. Local residents, business owners, even young musicians as young as six, join Tilbrook and his son, Leon, also a musician, in a powerful display of unity.

The vision extends beyond a simple pub restoration. Plans include a dedicated arts space above the bar, equipped with digital content facilities, rehearsal rooms, and a small stage. This space is designed to be a nurturing ground for emerging talent, a stepping stone towards larger venues like the nearby O2 Arena.

Squeeze singer-songwriter Glenn Tilbrook is spearheading a grassroots effort to buy back the derelict White Swan pub in Charlton and return it to the heart of the community. A newly formed charity, White Swan Music and Arts, has launched a crowdfunder to raise an initial deposit to buy back the Victorian two-storey building and prise it from the hands of developers.

The White Swan isn’t just about preserving a building; it’s about safeguarding a legacy. It’s about ensuring that future generations have the same opportunities to discover their passion, connect with their community, and share their art with the world.
