A clear mandate resonated across Tennessee’s 7th district Tuesday night as Republican Matt Van Epps secured a decisive victory in the special congressional election. The outcome wasn’t a nail-biter; Van Epps consistently led throughout the evening, ultimately surpassing his opponent by a margin of at least six percentage points.
The contest pitted Van Epps against Aftyn Behn, a candidate representing the far-left wing of the Democratic party. The stark ideological contrast fueled a closely watched race, but voters ultimately favored Van Epps’ platform and vision for the district.
This election was triggered by the resignation of Republican Mark Green earlier in July. Green stepped down to pursue new opportunities in the private sector, leaving the seat vacant and prompting the special election to determine his successor.
Election officials were able to confidently call the race with a substantial 71% of the vote already tallied. The swift declaration underscored the strength of Van Epps’ performance and the clear preference expressed by Tennessee voters.
