YOUR TONGUE WILL TIE ITSELF IN KNOTS OVER THESE NAMES!

YOUR TONGUE WILL TIE ITSELF IN KNOTS OVER THESE NAMES!

The year’s headlines, from a historic election to a daring theft, presented a surprising challenge for many Americans: pronunciation. A new list revealed the words and names that tripped up news anchors, politicians, and the public alike, offering a glimpse into the stories that captivated the nation.

Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s incoming mayor, topped the list. His name, correctly pronounced zoh-RAHN mam-DAH-nee, frequently suffered from a swapped “M” and “N” in his last name. The mispronunciations weren’t lost on Mamdani himself, who gently corrected a former governor during a debate, emphasizing the correct spelling: “M-A-M-D-A-N-I.”

The audacious jewel heist at the Louvre museum also sparked pronunciation struggles. Many stumbled over the French name, which should be spoken as LOOV-ruh, with a delicate, almost silent “ruh” at the end. This subtle sound proved difficult for English speakers to master.

Linguistic experts explain that these challenges arise because many of these words originate from different languages, requiring speakers to produce sounds unfamiliar to them. Adapting to these new phonetic landscapes takes practice and awareness.

Beyond the headlines, common words also presented difficulties. Acetaminophen, the generic name for Tylenol, often became a tongue-twister, even for a former president who fumbled the pronunciation while discussing its use during pregnancy. The correct pronunciation is uh-SEE-tuh-MIH-nuh-fen.

The Murdaugh case, a true crime saga dramatized on television, also contributed to the list. The name Alex Murdaugh is properly pronounced AL-ick MUR-dock, a distinction often lost in media coverage.

The rising popularity of medications like Mounjaro, used for diabetes and weight loss, added another name to the mix. Its correct pronunciation, mown-JAHR-OH, proved elusive for many as the drug gained prominence.

Interestingly, several words – including Louvre and Mounjaro – appeared on both the U.S. and U.K. lists, compiled by language experts in both countries. Storm Eowyn, which impacted the British Isles, also made the U.K. list, pronounced ay-OH-win with a distinct three-beat rhythm.

Captioners and linguists continuously monitor emerging pronunciation challenges, noting words that repeatedly cause difficulty. This ongoing observation provides valuable insight into the evolving linguistic landscape.

In a surprising revelation, actor Denzel Washington shared that his first name is actually pronounced DEN-zul, mirroring his father’s name. However, his mother opted for the more familiar Den-ZELLE to avoid confusion, a testament to the power of personal preference and clarity.
