A terrifying night unfolded in Rexdale late Tuesday, culminating in a violent home invasion and kidnapping that left three people held hostage. The ordeal began just before 11 p.m. on John Garland Blvd., when four men descended upon a resident as he arrived home.
Arriving in a red Honda Civic, the assailants immediately brandished firearms, forcing the man into his own vehicle. For a harrowing hour, he was driven around the area while the abductors issued a series of demands, escalating the tension with each passing minute.
The group returned to the home, confronting a second victim – the homeowner – and escalating the situation with the display of a shotgun. Both men were then forced inside, where a third, unsuspecting resident was asleep. All three were now prisoners in their own home.
A search for valuables ensued, with the suspects ransacking the house and stealing jewelry, clothing, cash, and cannabis. They ultimately fled the scene in the homeowner’s blue Ford F-150, leaving behind a scene of chaos and fear.
Police responded swiftly, locating the red Honda Civic around 1:45 a.m. on Hwy. 401 and Weston Rd. A tense standoff followed, as one suspect attempted to escape on foot. The situation turned dangerous when he produced a loaded handgun and aimed it at responding officers.
Officers reacted decisively, disarming the suspect and taking him into custody. Simultaneously, the stolen Ford F-150 was tracked to a dead-end street near Albion Rd. and Islington Ave., where the driver attempted to ram pursuing police vehicles.
A further pursuit led officers to St. Clair Ave. W. and Runnymede Rd., where the suspect in the F-150 was apprehended after a chase involving the Emergency Task Force and a K-9 unit. The coordinated effort brought a second individual into custody.
The first man arrested was identified as Jermain Smith, 35, and faces a litany of serious charges including kidnapping, robbery with a firearm, and theft of a motor vehicle. He is also accused of pointing a loaded firearm directly at a police officer.
Tajahan Kelly, 30, was also arrested and charged with violating his release conditions and possessing firearms despite a prohibition order. Investigators expressed relief that no officers were injured during the dangerous encounters.
Despite the arrests, the investigation remains ongoing as police continue to search for the two remaining suspects involved in the terrifying home invasion. Descriptions released have been limited, adding to the urgency of the search.
