A wave of shock rippled through the Tower of London Saturday as four protesters launched a brazen act of defiance against one of Britain’s most iconic symbols of power. The target: the heavily guarded display case protecting the Imperial State Crown, a glittering testament to centuries of monarchy.
The protest unfolded with startling speed. Members of a group calling themselves Take Back Power smeared apple crumble and doused the protective glass with bright yellow custard – familiar comforts transformed into instruments of rebellion. The sticky assault briefly forced the closure of the Crown Jewels exhibit.
The Imperial State Crown itself remained untouched, a dazzling fortress of 2,868 diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, rubies, and pearls. Crafted in 1937 for the coronation of King George VI, it’s a symbol intimately linked to the recent coronation of King Charles III and his opening of Parliament.
Police swiftly moved to arrest the four individuals, detaining them on suspicion of criminal damage. Despite the dramatic scene, officials confirmed the jewels themselves were unharmed, preserving a vital piece of national heritage.
Take Back Power, a group advocating for a permanent citizens’ assembly and increased taxes on extreme wealth, claimed responsibility for the act. Two members executed the food-based protest, while two others were apprehended, playfully referred to as being taken into “custard-y” by the group.
This incident echoes a growing trend of civil disobedience targeting celebrated artworks and treasures. Last year, activists were imprisoned after throwing tomato soup at Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” at the National Gallery, a similar attempt to force attention onto a political message.
Footage from the Tower of London revealed the moment of impact, capturing the stunned reactions of onlookers as the protesters attacked the display. The historic Tower, once a royal palace and infamous prison – the final resting place for figures like Anne Boleyn and Thomas More – bore witness to the unfolding drama.
As an employee intervened and alerted security, the protesters unveiled a stark message: “Democracy has crumbled. Tax the rich.” The sign, juxtaposed against the opulent display, underscored the group’s core demand and the motivation behind their audacious act.
