MAMDANI'S MEGA-MOVE: From Rent Control to Riches!

MAMDANI'S MEGA-MOVE: From Rent Control to Riches!

The incoming mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, has announced a significant personal change: he and his wife will be trading their modest Astoria apartment for the historic grandeur of Gracie Mansion when he takes office in January.

The decision, revealed in a recent post, wasn’t taken lightly. Mamdani cited both the need to prioritize his family’s safety and his unwavering commitment to the affordability agenda that propelled him into office.

The move represents a stark contrast to the life Mamdani and his wife, Rama Duwaji, have known. Their current one-bedroom apartment, secured under rent stabilization, became a focal point during the mayoral race, drawing scrutiny and even criticism.

Past political opponents questioned whether Mamdani’s income as a state assemblyman justified benefiting from affordable housing, a debate that underscored the very issues he campaigned on. The $2,300 monthly rent for their apartment sparked considerable discussion.

Gracie Mansion, a landmark residence over two centuries old, offers a world apart. The sprawling estate, one of the city’s oldest wooden buildings still in use, encompasses over 10,000 square feet.

Within its walls lie five bedrooms, a magnificent ballroom, and breathtaking panoramic views of the East River – a far cry from the everyday life in Astoria. Mamdani playfully acknowledged the change, sharing a photo of a miniature Gracie Mansion from a recent visit to the New York Botanical Garden’s holiday train show.

Despite the impending move to a symbol of civic power, Mamdani expressed a deep affection for the Astoria community he’s called home for years. He spoke of cherished memories and a lasting connection to the neighborhood.

“While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will always live inside me and the work I do,” he stated, reaffirming his dedication to serving all New Yorkers, from the line cooks on Steinway Street to the children playing in Dutch Kills Playground.

Mamdani will officially be sworn into office on New Year’s Day, marking not only a new chapter for the city but also a profound personal transition for its incoming leader.
