SPADE EXPLODES: Mall Bans CHRISTMAS?!

Comedian David Spade recently voiced his frustration with a growing trend: the deliberate omission of the word “Christmas” from holiday celebrations. He recounted a recent experience at a mall tree-lighting ceremony, noting the careful avoidance of the term during the entire event.

Spade questioned the logic behind this exclusion, wondering why a tree specifically associated with Christmas couldn’t be called by its traditional name. He playfully challenged the notion, asking if the tree’s purpose was lost without the connection to the holiday, suggesting alternative, and somewhat absurd, explanations.

His co-host, Dana Carvey, acknowledged the diverse religious backgrounds of people they know, but pointed out a surprising observation: those of other faiths haven’t expressed offense at the presence of Christmas trees. Carvey even dismissed the practice as unnecessary, stating a firm opposition to “thought police” and restricted language.

Spade passionately agreed, expressing concern over what he perceived as an “anti-Christian feel.” He felt it mirrored a broader pattern of limitations, contrasting it with the freedom to express other beliefs without censure, and lamented a perceived vulnerability of Christian expression.

The conversation shifted to the enduring appeal of Christmas songs, a comforting reminder of tradition. However, the discussion was fueled by a real-world example: Portland, Oregon’s decision to remove “Christmas” from its annual tree-lighting event, a practice reportedly ongoing since 2019.

Online, reactions were swift and critical, with one user lamenting a gradual erosion of tradition, fearing a future where all familiar elements are stripped away. The incident resonated with a larger debate about the place of religious terminology in public spaces.

This isn’t a new debate. Years ago, a former president publicly vowed to reinstate “Merry Christmas” as a common greeting, arguing it had been suppressed by a desire for political correctness. He framed it as a defense of a cherished tradition.

Recent polling data suggests a preference for the traditional greeting remains strong, with a significant majority of people favoring “Merry Christmas.” While “Happy Holidays” has gained some traction, particularly among younger generations, the classic phrase still holds a dominant position.

The trend extends beyond tree-lighting ceremonies. In Toronto, a popular Christmas market was rebranded as a “Winter Village” a few years ago, a change that sparked similar discussions about the importance of preserving cultural and religious traditions.

Ultimately, the conversation highlights a tension between inclusivity and the preservation of long-held customs, raising questions about how society navigates diverse beliefs during a season steeped in tradition.
