DEADLY FLU MUTATES: MASKS BACK—IMMEDIATE THREAT!

DEADLY FLU MUTATES: MASKS BACK—IMMEDIATE THREAT!

The echoes of the Covid-19 pandemic, once fading into memory, are now reverberating through hospitals and pharmacies across the country. A familiar sight – medical staff masked and vigilant – is returning as a new wave of illness grips the nation.

What began as a gradual abandonment of precautions like masks and hand sanitiser is now reversing course. Pharmacist Rita Arora in London observes a striking trend: people are responding to this year’s surge in illness with the same preventative mindset they adopted during the height of Covid-19.

Hospitals are taking notice. Trusts like Frimley, encompassing Wexham Park, Heatherwood, and Frimley Park, are bracing for impact. University Hospitals Sussex has already mandated masks for staff and visitors in critical areas like A&E and wards with confirmed flu cases.

The culprit isn’t simply a typical flu season. A newly mutated strain of H3N2, boasting seven alterations, is proving remarkably adept at evading existing immunity. This heightened transmissibility is translating into a dramatic increase in hospitalisations – London currently sees three times the number of flu patients compared to this time last year.

The pressure is intensifying. London Ambulance Service reported call volumes rivaling those of New Year’s Eve, their busiest day, during the last weekend of November. The NHS has issued an urgent plea for increased flu vaccinations, acknowledging the season’s early start and the strain on resources.

However, access to the vaccine itself is becoming a challenge. Demand has surged, with pharmacies like Rita Arora’s experiencing a tenfold increase in walk-in patients seeking protection. The scramble for preventative care underscores the growing anxiety surrounding the current outbreak.

Current vaccination rates, as of late November, reveal a concerning gap. Only 41% of those aged six months to 64 years with clinical risk factors have been vaccinated, alongside 42% of those who are immunosuppressed. While coverage is higher among over-65s (70%) and care home residents (71%), these figures fall short of the World Health Organisation’s 75% target for vulnerable populations.

Great Western Hospitals NHS Trust is actively requesting masks for all entering their facilities, citing a 63% increase in flu hospitalisations within the past week. They anticipate further rises with the approaching holiday season and increased social interaction. Masks are readily available for those who need them.

The return of preventative measures isn’t simply a matter of habit; it’s a response to a tangible and escalating threat. As the flu season intensifies, hospitals and individuals alike are revisiting lessons learned, seeking to protect themselves and their communities from a resurgent illness.
