A joyous Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, transformed into a scene of unimaginable horror as a father and son unleashed a brutal attack, leaving sixteen people dead – including one of the perpetrators – and forty others wounded.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon revealed the shocking details: a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son were responsible for the terror. The father died at the scene, while the son remains hospitalized in critical, yet stable, condition. Investigators currently believe they were acting alone.
The scale of the tragedy is devastating, with victims ranging in age from just ten years old to eighty-seven. The attack occurred during “Chanukah By The Sea,” an annual event marking the first day of Hanukkah with the lighting of the Menorah’s first candle.
What began as a festive gathering, scheduled to commence at 5 p.m., descended into chaos around 6:45 p.m. local time. Authorities have confirmed the attack was deliberately “targeted” at the Jewish community and is being investigated as an act of terrorism.
The father possessed a license for six legally registered firearms, all of which have now been recovered. Some were found at the scene itself, while others were located during searches of two separate properties.
Hospitals are overwhelmed, treating at least forty injured individuals, including two police officers who responded to the unfolding crisis. This horrific event marks the most severe attack against the Jewish community since the October 7th terror attacks.
Adding to the danger, investigators discovered multiple improvised explosive devices within a vehicle near the shooting location. Bomb disposal units are currently working to neutralize the threat, meticulously dismantling the devices.
The news reverberated across the globe, reaching Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who expressed profound sorrow and solidarity. Speaking in Jerusalem, he described the attack as a “cruel” act of terror against those gathered to celebrate Hanukkah.
Herzog extended heartfelt prayers for the wounded and the families of those lost, and implored the Australian government to confront the rising tide of antisemitism within its borders. The world now mourns with the community in Bondi Beach, grappling with the aftermath of this senseless tragedy.
