A Christmas Day of joy turned into a nightmare on the streets of London as a man unleashed a terrifying rampage, leaving one dead and four injured. Anthony Gilheaney, 31, was found guilty of murder after deliberately driving into pedestrians in a high-powered Mercedes.
The horrific events unfolded as 25-year-old Aidan Chapman and others were simply enjoying a festive night out. Gilheaney, with no driving license, targeted strangers along Shaftesbury Avenue, turning a vibrant city center into a scene of chaos and devastation.
Captured on a dashcam, the footage revealed a disturbing pattern of aggression. Before the vehicular attacks, Gilheaney had already engaged in unprovoked violence, punching strangers and directing racial abuse at a man named Arif Khan.
The confrontation with Khan escalated when Gilheaney drove at him, knocking him to the ground before launching a physical assault. This initial act of violence was interrupted by the return of Khan’s friends, who reportedly confronted Gilheaney.
Undeterred, Gilheaney then drove his car onto the pavement, mounting the curb and deliberately targeting pedestrians. Marcelo Basbus-Garcia and his partner, Miguel Waihrich, were struck while walking hand-in-hand after attending midnight mass.
The most devastating blow came when Gilheaney rammed his car directly into Aidan Chapman and Tyrone Itorho. Chapman suffered catastrophic brain damage and tragically died in hospital on New Year’s Eve, after a desperate fight for his life.
Following the attacks, Gilheaney abandoned his vehicle, letting it crash into a signpost, and was later found passed out in Holborn. He claimed he was attacked and lost control of the car, but the jury rejected his defense.
Aidan Chapman’s family released a heartbreaking statement, expressing their unimaginable grief. “Gilheaney has taken the best part of us,” they said, “He has left us with a dark void in our lives that can never be filled.”
The jury found Gilheaney guilty of murder, attempted murder, and wounding with intent. He had previously admitted manslaughter in the case of Mr. Chapman, but denied the more serious charges. He is scheduled to be sentenced on January 30th.
The senseless violence has left a community reeling and a family shattered, a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless and malicious actions. The streets of London, usually filled with festive cheer, became the backdrop for a tragedy that will forever be etched in the memories of those affected.
