PYTHON TERROR: Monster Snake Yanked From Family Neighborhood!

PYTHON TERROR: Monster Snake Yanked From Family Neighborhood!

A quiet Miami-Dade neighborhood received an unexpected visitor just days before Christmas – a Burmese python. The snake wasn’t a welcome guest, and its presence sparked growing concern among residents as the holidays neared.

The discovery unfolded when a local resident, enjoying a walk, spotted the python coiled within the dense foliage of an areca palm beside a home. Immediately, they contacted a professional snake wrangler, setting a rescue operation in motion.

Video footage captured the stunned reactions of onlookers as the python was carefully extracted from the palm. A woman’s audible gasp – “Oh gosh, oh my gosh!” – echoed the collective surprise and apprehension of those witnessing the event.

Michael Ronquillo, of Humane Iguana Control, identified the reptile as a Burmese python, explaining its likely journey into the residential area. He theorized the snake had traveled through one of the local canals, seeking new territory.

Despite the snake’s considerable size, Ronquillo remained composed throughout the capture. He admitted to being slightly surprised, noting, “Yeah, I thought it would be bigger,” but his expertise shone through as he skillfully handled the animal.

The python’s location presented a significant danger. Concealed deep within the areca palm, directly adjacent to a home, it posed a potential threat to both people and pets. A keen-eyed neighbor’s observation was crucial in pinpointing its hiding place.

Measuring roughly 6½ feet long and weighing around 30 pounds, the python’s presence understandably alarmed residents. Their primary worry centered on the safety of their families, particularly their children and beloved pets.

Ronquillo emphasized the risk involved in the removal, explaining the difficulty in locating the snake’s head amidst the dense network of palm fronds. The situation demanded precision and caution to avoid a potentially dangerous strike.

However, Ronquillo’s extensive experience with iguana and python removals provided a sense of calm. He described the work as a “thrill,” born from familiarity and a dedication to safe wildlife management.

Had the python remained undetected, it would have likely begun preying on local wildlife – cats, possums, and raccoons – disrupting the delicate balance of the urban ecosystem. Its predatory nature presented a clear and present danger.

Sightings of pythons in urban areas are becoming increasingly common, with Ronquillo’s team responding to at least one or two removal requests each month. A similar incident just months prior in Doral had also caused widespread panic.

Ronquillo issued a stern warning against attempting to handle a python without professional training. He highlighted the danger of their backward-facing teeth – roughly 100 of them – designed to lock onto prey, potentially causing severe and even deadly injuries.

If a python is spotted, residents should observe it from a safe distance, avoiding any actions that might startle or provoke it. Interference could cause the snake to flee, making capture more difficult and increasing the risk to the public.

Trained professionals, like Ronquillo’s team, possess the knowledge and expertise to safely and effectively remove invasive snakes. They also understand the importance of humane euthanasia, as recommended by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
