TRUMP'S WARSHIPS ARE COMING: Prepare for the Golden Fleet!

A vision of naval dominance, steeped in nostalgia and fueled by ambition, has emerged from a recent announcement. Former President Trump unveiled plans for a new generation of warships – battleships – intended to form the core of what he calls a “Golden Fleet.” The concept promises a return to a bygone era of naval power, reimagined for the 21st century.

The first vessel, christened the USS Defiant, is envisioned as a leviathan surpassing even the formidable Iowa-class battleships of World War II. Trump boldly declared these new ships would be “the fastest, the biggest, and by far 100 times more powerful” than their historical predecessors. This isn’t simply a matter of scale, but a leap into the realm of cutting-edge weaponry.

The proposed arsenal is breathtaking in its scope: hypersonic missiles, nuclear cruise missiles, rail guns, and high-powered lasers. These technologies, while promising, represent significant hurdles. Many are still in development, and some, like the rail gun, have already proven elusive after years of investment and experimentation.

A concept rendering of the proposed Trump class USS Defiant is displayed as U.S. President Donald Trump announces the U.S. Navy's new Golden Fleet initiative, unveiling plans for a new class of warships at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla., on Dec. 22, 2025.

This announcement arrives at a complex moment for the Navy. Recent attempts to modernize the fleet have been plagued by delays and escalating costs. A planned new class of smaller warships was scrapped, replaced by a modified Coast Guard cutter. Even flagship projects like the Ford-class aircraft carrier and Columbia-class submarines have struggled to stay on schedule and within budget.

The history of battleships is one of dramatic shifts in naval strategy. Once the undisputed kings of the sea, these heavily armored vessels dominated the oceans for decades. The Iowa-class, reaching 60,000 tons, represented the pinnacle of battleship design. But the rise of aircraft carriers and long-range missiles rendered them increasingly obsolete after World War II.

Though modernized in the 1980s with cruise missiles, the last of the U.S. battleships were decommissioned by the 1990s. The new “guided missile battleship” aims to resurrect the concept, but with a crucial difference. It’s projected to be lighter – around 35,000 tons – and rely primarily on missile-based weaponry, rather than massive guns.

The project’s timeline anticipates construction beginning in the early 2030s, with design efforts already underway. The vision extends beyond mere functionality. Trump intends to be deeply involved in the ship’s aesthetic design, stating, “I’m a very aesthetic person.” He previously intervened in the design of another ship class, demanding a more visually appealing outcome.

Navy Secretary John Phelan echoed the sentiment, suggesting the USS Defiant will be a symbol of American power, inspiring “awe and reverence” in foreign ports. However, the path forward is fraught with challenges, balancing ambitious goals with the realities of technological development and budgetary constraints. The former President has a history of late-night communications with the Navy Secretary regarding ship appearance and maintenance.

The revival of the battleship concept represents a bold gamble, a fusion of historical reverence and futuristic technology. Whether this “Golden Fleet” will truly materialize remains to be seen, but the ambition behind it is undeniable, signaling a desire to reshape the future of naval warfare.
