VAN OF WRECKAGE: Driver's Booze-Fueled Crash SHOCKS Town!

The chilling moments before impact were captured on John Doocey’s own phone. Footage released by authorities revealed him casually filming himself, a can of Stella Artois in hand, just seconds before a devastating crash.

As the van hurtled down the road at over 80mph, Doocey cracked open the beer, seemingly oblivious to the danger he was creating. The video paints a stark picture of reckless disregard for life, a fleeting moment of nonchalance preceding a life-altering collision.

The crash left two passengers with injuries that could impact them for years to come. Authorities emphasized the gravity of Doocey’s actions, highlighting the potential for far more tragic consequences.

Police described the incident as a prime example of the dangerous behaviors they confront daily. Driving, they stressed, is a privilege earned through responsible conduct, a privilege Doocey carelessly forfeited.

This case arrives amidst a sobering statistic: over 50 people have lost their lives on Essex roads. Speed was a significant factor in many of the most serious incidents, underscoring the critical need for vigilance and responsible driving.

Doocey was sentenced to three years in jail, along with a three-year driving ban and a requirement to pass an extended retest before ever being allowed back behind the wheel. The sentence serves as a stark warning to others who might consider similar reckless behavior.

Our officers identified John Doocey was driving a Nissan NT400 flatbed van at 90mph along the A133 at Frating on around 7.05pm on 3 August this year. They established he had attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre during extremely poor conditions, with heavy rainfall limiting visibility and leaving significant standing water on the road. Shortly after the overtake, Doocey lost control of his vehicle which fishtailed, left the carriageway, rolled, and hit a tree. One of his passengers was able to get out of the vehicle but the other was trapped until emergency services were able to get him out. The passenger who was trapped sustained a potentially life-changing spinal injury while the other was left with a broken ankle. Doocey, 30, of High Road, Trimley St. Martin in Suffolk was arrested at the scene and later charged with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He admitted the charges at Ipswich Crown Court on 8 October and, at the same court on Friday 31 October, was jailed for three years. He has also been given a three year disqualification and will have to undertake an extended retest.

The officer involved in the case expressed relief that the collision wasn’t fatal, acknowledging that the speed and recklessness displayed could easily have resulted in a tragedy. The focus now is on preventing future incidents and protecting vulnerable road users.
