Joanne Young, a woman already known for extraordinary bravery, received a chief officer’s commendation for a deeply harrowing act. She risked her own safety to recover the body of a missing person from the swift, cold currents of the River Avon.
The situation was desperate. Authorities estimated a specialist dive team would require ten hours to arrive on scene. Knowing time was critical, Joanne, along with two fellow volunteers, made the agonizing decision to attempt the recovery themselves, facing the river’s dangers head-on.
Chief Constable Catherine Roper publicly acknowledged Joanne’s actions, describing them as demonstrating “extraordinary dedication, professionalism and humanity” under circumstances that would test anyone’s limits. The emotional toll of such a recovery is almost unimaginable.
However, this act of selfless courage unfolded against a backdrop of unimaginable personal trauma. Joanne Young is now at the center of a disturbing criminal case, alleging years of abuse and assault.
Her former husband, Philip Young, has been charged with 56 separate sexual offenses, including rape. The allegations paint a horrifying picture of sustained abuse inflicted upon Joanne over a period of thirteen years, stretching from 2010 to 2023.
The investigation has widened, revealing a network of alleged attackers. Norman Macksoni, Dean Hamilton, Richard Wilkins, Connor Sanderson Doyle, and Mohammed Hassan have all been charged in connection with assaults against Joanne.
All five men were released on bail ahead of a hearing scheduled for January 23rd, and will spend the Christmas season at home. Courtroom sketches revealed most attempted to conceal their faces as they entered and exited the magistrates’ court.
Police are now urgently seeking a seventh man, hoping to question him regarding a separate alleged sexual assault on Joanne. This individual is described as having a distinctive physical appearance, including significant scarring on the back of his head.
Investigators have released images of the suspect taken in April-May 2022, the period when the alleged assault occurred. He is described as being of large build, with prominent lips, a hairy body, and a receding hairline, often kept shaved or very short.
A key identifying feature is a tattoo located on the left side of his chest, visible in the released images. Authorities are appealing for any information that could lead to his identification and questioning, hoping to bring further closure to this deeply disturbing case.
