SEVEN YEARS FOR SAVAGERY: He Stole a Life & Justice Feels TOO SLOW.

SEVEN YEARS FOR SAVAGERY: He Stole a Life & Justice Feels TOO SLOW.

A Sarnia apartment became the scene of a horrific tragedy earlier this year, culminating in a seven-year prison sentence for Adam Bishop. The victim, 66-year-old Christopher Bond, a vulnerable man with limited mobility, was found lifeless, bound and abandoned in Bishop’s second-floor apartment on Queen Street.

The discovery on February 21st, 2024, followed days of Bishop being at large, having fled the scene by jumping from a balcony after police arrived. He was eventually apprehended and charged with first-degree murder, later pleading guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. The details revealed a chilling sequence of events, born from a chaotic and desperate situation.

According to court documents, Bishop’s apartment had become a haven for individuals caught in the grip of Sarnia’s drug culture, sometimes even serving as a temporary shelter when he was absent. On the night of February 17th or 18th, Bishop returned to find a woman distraught, claiming she had been sexually assaulted in his apartment while unconscious from drugs.

He found Christopher Bond, a stranger to him, inside. An argument quickly escalated into a violent struggle. Bond, despite his physical limitations, lashed out with a piece of broken furniture, injuring Bishop’s leg. The confrontation spiraled into a fatal act of aggression.

Bishop subdued Bond, choking him until he lost consciousness. Uncertain if Bond was still alive, he then bound his hands and feet, wrapped him in a blanket, and left him alone in a bedroom. Bishop then left the apartment, seeking refuge elsewhere for several days.

Upon his return on February 21st, Bishop learned of Bond’s death. Shortly after, police arrived, prompting his desperate escape attempt. An autopsy later confirmed the cause of death as neck compression, revealing the brutal reality of the encounter.

During the sentencing hearing, the court heard from Bond’s family, their grief raw and their anger palpable. His sister expressed the profound injustice of his stolen life. Bishop, who had spent nearly two years in jail, spoke of his efforts at rehabilitation and newfound understanding of the gravity of his actions.

Justice Perfetto, delivering the sentence, characterized the crime as callous, degrading, and gratuitous. While the Crown sought a nine-year sentence, and the defense argued for five to six, the final judgment landed at seven years, with credit given for pre-plea custody time, leaving approximately four years and two months remaining on the sentence.

This tragedy marked the first of two homicides on Queen Street in 2024, a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities and dangers present within the community. Later that year, a 22-year-old international student from Lambton College was fatally stabbed in a nearby rooming house, adding another layer of sorrow to the year’s events.
