CHRISTMAS FREEZE: Deadly Storm Incoming!

CHRISTMAS FREEZE: Deadly Storm Incoming!

A biting wind swept across the North Tyneside coastline on Christmas Eve, yet a determined group plunged into the frigid waters for their annual festive swim. Dressed in festive attire, they braved the wintry conditions, a testament to tradition and a shared spirit of resilience.

But this year, the celebrations are shadowed by a widespread weather warning. A yellow wind warning is currently in effect across much of Wales and the South West of England, stretching from 4am this morning until midnight.

The Met Office anticipates strong, gusty east to northeasterly winds, potentially reaching 55-65mph in exposed coastal areas and on the western slopes of hills. These powerful gusts threaten disruption to travel and could lead to localized power outages.

The coastline itself presents a hazard. Large waves are predicted, urging caution for anyone venturing near cliffs. The sea’s unpredictable nature has already forced difficult decisions regarding beloved holiday traditions.

The annual Coverack swim in Cornwall has been postponed, and a Boxing Day swim in Devon has been cancelled outright, both victims of the increasingly rough seas. Organizers prioritized safety, recognizing the potential danger.

Beyond the wind, a cold weather health alert is also in place. The UK Health Security Agency issued a yellow alert for the South West of England, beginning at 6pm today and lasting until midday on December 27th.

This alert signals a likely increase in demand for healthcare services, particularly among vulnerable populations. The cold weather poses a greater risk to life for those already struggling with health concerns.

Despite the challenging conditions, the forecast doesn’t promise a white Christmas for most. Met Office chief meteorologist Steve Willington stated there’s no widespread snowfall anticipated.

However, a small chance remains for a light shower, potentially a mix of rain and sleet, with the possibility of snow on higher ground. While a blanket of snow isn’t expected, a dusting remains a faint possibility.

The combination of strong winds, cold temperatures, and potentially hazardous coastal conditions demands vigilance and preparedness. Staying informed and taking necessary precautions are crucial during this festive period.

The areas currently under the yellow wind warning include Bath and North East Somerset, Cornwall, Devon, the Isles of Scilly, North Somerset, Plymouth, Somerset, and Torbay in South West England.

In Wales, the warning covers Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Gwynedd, the Isle of Anglesey, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, and the Vale of Glamorgan.
