TRUMP'S HOLLYWOOD TAKEOVER: You Won't Believe How Deep It Goes!

TRUMP'S HOLLYWOOD TAKEOVER: You Won't Believe How Deep It Goes!

Four decades after his initial foray into Hollywood, marked by fleeting cameos and a reality television show, Donald Trump’s connection to the entertainment industry reached a new peak during the first year of his second term. His influence wasn’t subtle; it was a reshaping of the landscape, a demonstration of power rarely seen between the White House and Tinseltown.

One of the most visible displays of this influence involved a concerted effort to pressure late-night television hosts. The long-simmering feuds with comedians escalated dramatically, beginning with a public celebration of Stephen Colbert’s show cancellation. The timing felt pointed, coinciding with a significant settlement between CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global, and Trump over edits made to a 60 Minutes interview.

Paramount’s explanation for axing Colbert – financial reasons – rang hollow to many, especially after the Federal Communications Commission approved the Paramount-Skydance merger just a week later. Though no concrete evidence linked the events, the perception was clear: a favor granted to the President. Trump himself openly welcomed Colbert’s departure, hinting at Jimmy Kimmel as the next target.

That targeting continued with Kimmel’s brief suspension from ABC and Nexstar following controversial remarks. The FCC Chairman questioned whether the comments violated broadcasting standards, leading to a six-day suspension. Trump repeatedly attacked Kimmel’s ratings and publicly dismissed him as inferior to legendary hosts like Johnny Carson and Bob Hope, further solidifying his disdain.

Beyond individual hosts, Trump cultivated a strategically close relationship with Larry Ellison, whose son, David Ellison, headed the newly merged Paramount Skydance studio. This relationship proved pivotal, leading to a complete overhaul of CBS News, including the appointment of Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief and the creation of an independent ombudsman to address bias concerns.

The newly aligned CBS even secured an interview with Trump, airing a 60 Minutes episode in November following their legal dispute. However, the honeymoon was short-lived. Trump publicly criticized the network for platforming Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, ultimately withdrawing his endorsement after a policy disagreement escalated into personal attacks and threats against Greene and her family.

The Paramount Skydance merger positioned David Ellison to potentially outbid Netflix for Warner Bros. Discovery, a move that could reshape the streaming landscape. Trump openly cast doubt on the Netflix-WBD deal, suggesting it could create a market dominance issue and stating he would be involved in its approval. He even expressed a desire to see CNN sold off as part of the process, citing concerns about its leadership.

Ellison reportedly promised “sweeping changes” to CNN, mirroring the overhaul at CBS. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos also courted Trump, but Paramount Skydance’s bid encompassed the entirety of WBD, while Netflix focused solely on the studio and streaming assets. The stakes were incredibly high, and Trump’s involvement was undeniable.

Trump’s influence extended beyond corporate deals and into the realm of film production itself. He reportedly leveraged his connection with David Ellison to greenlight Rush Hour 4, a revival of the popular buddy cop franchise. The President, a known fan of the series, even offered creative input, expressing a desire to bring back classic comedies and action films from the 80s and 90s.

This behind-the-scenes maneuvering wasn’t limited to action comedies. First Lady Melania Trump launched Muse Films, debuting with a documentary offering a behind-the-scenes look at her life. The $40 million deal with Amazon Prime Video was reportedly facilitated by the President, with Melania Trump serving as an executive producer. The documentary was even directed by the same filmmaker behind the original Rush Hour films.

The confluence of these events painted a striking picture: a former reality television star, now President, wielding unprecedented influence over the entertainment industry. It was a power dynamic that blurred the lines between politics and Hollywood, leaving an indelible mark on both worlds.
