The Colosseo-Fori Imperiali station, situated directly under the Colosseum, isn’t merely a transportation hub; it’s a museum in itself. Just a short distance away, the Porta Metronia station reveals a different facet of Roman power: a nearly 260-foot-long military barracks dating back to the second century AD. The opening of these stations coincides with new initiatives to manage the overwhelming influx of tourists to Rome. Officials recently announced a small fee for visitors wishing to view the Trevi Fountain up close, a measure designed to alleviate overcrowding and protect the monument.
