A chilling turn of events has unfolded for Chad Aaron Ollinger, the 41-year-old known from the Discovery Channel series, as he now faces a charge of open murder. The accusation stems from a violent altercation within the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, a tragedy occurring just weeks before his anticipated release.
Friday’s routine check by corrections officers revealed a horrifying scene: an unidentified inmate lying unresponsive in his cell, bearing the brutal marks of a physical assault. Despite desperate attempts at resuscitation, the man was declared dead at the scene, casting a dark shadow over the detention center.
Ollinger, who shared the cell with the victim, was immediately identified as a suspect and taken into custody. Investigators with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department quickly determined a fierce fight had erupted between the two men, leading to the fatal injuries.
The victim’s identity remains withheld as authorities continue their investigation. Ollinger has been re-booked on the charge of open murder and is currently being held without bail, with a court arraignment scheduled for Tuesday.
Ollinger initially gained public recognition alongside his father, Duane Ollinger, on a television program documenting their treasure hunting and paranormal investigations on a remote Utah ranch steeped in local legend. The show focused on the purported curse surrounding the property and their relentless search for hidden riches.
His current legal woes began escalating in November of last year with an arrest in Texas for evading police. A motorcycle chase quickly transitioned into a foot pursuit, ultimately leading to his capture. He was subsequently indicted on related charges in January.
The cycle of legal trouble continued the following month with a rearrest in Gray County, Texas, this time for operating a vehicle with an invalid driver’s license. A brief period of uncertainty followed in July when Ollinger’s family reported him missing in New Mexico, only to locate him in Albuquerque.
His journey culminated in an October booking at the Clark County Detention Center, stemming from a contempt-of-court charge. A relatively short sentence, with an original release date set for January 12th, promised a return to freedom. Now, that prospect has vanished, replaced by the grim reality of a capital murder case that could condemn him to a lifetime behind bars.
