UKRAINE STRIKES BACK: 24 DEAD – Is Peace Now IMPOSSIBLE?

UKRAINE STRIKES BACK: 24 DEAD – Is Peace Now IMPOSSIBLE?

A New Year’s celebration in a Russian-occupied village in Ukraine’s Kherson region turned into a scene of devastation Thursday, with Russian officials reporting a drone strike that claimed the lives of 24 people and injured at least 50 more. The attack targeted a cafe and hotel in the resort town of Khorly, situated on the Black Sea coast, igniting a fierce blaze after a drone delivered an incendiary payload.

The claim of responsibility remains unconfirmed by Ukrainian officials, and independent verification of the attack has proven elusive. However, the incident has already sparked outrage within Russia, with prominent figures vowing a strengthened resolve to achieve their objectives in the ongoing conflict, now entering its fourth year.

Valentina Matviyenko, chair of Russia’s upper house of parliament, declared the strike as justification for Russia’s initial demands, framing it as a catalyst for accelerating their military campaign. This statement arrives amidst heightened tensions, following Moscow’s allegations of a prior drone attack targeting one of President Vladimir Putin’s official residences.

This handout photo released by Russia-appointed governor of the Kherson region, Vladimir Saldo, shows the site of a Ukrainian drone attack on the hotel in Khroly on Jan. 1, 2025.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence asserted that they recovered data from a downed drone, purportedly confirming Putin’s residence as the intended target. While the ministry offered to share this data with U.S. officials, they provided no concrete evidence to support their claim. A released video depicted a camouflaged figure examining drone wreckage in a snowy landscape, but lacked crucial details regarding location or timing.

Kyiv has vehemently dismissed the accusations of an attack on Putin’s residence as a deliberate fabrication, suggesting it was a ploy to disrupt burgeoning peace negotiations. These talks, gaining momentum across the Atlantic, had recently shown promising signs of progress.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in his New Year’s address, indicated that a peace deal was nearly finalized, estimating it to be “90% ready.” However, he cautioned that the remaining 10%, encompassing critical issues like territorial disputes, would ultimately determine the fate of Ukraine and the wider European landscape.

Former U.S. officials, including Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, reported a “productive call” with national security advisors from several European nations and Ukraine. The discussion centered on advancing the peace process, focusing on security guarantees and deconfliction mechanisms to prevent future hostilities.

Further meetings are planned, with Ukrainian and European officials scheduled to convene Saturday, and President Zelenskyy preparing for talks with European leaders next week. These diplomatic efforts represent a crucial attempt to navigate the complex challenges and secure a lasting resolution.

Simultaneously, Russia continued its attacks elsewhere in Ukraine, targeting civilian infrastructure in the Odesa region with waves of drones overnight. A residential building sustained damage, and a drone impacted an apartment on the 17th floor of a high-rise, thankfully without detonating. No casualties were reported in these attacks.

Ukraine’s air force reported intercepting or suppressing 176 out of 205 drones targeting the country overnight, though 24 strike drones managed to reach their targets at 15 different locations, with the attacks continuing into the early hours.
