At least 40 dead in fire at Swiss Alps bar during New Year’s celebrations, police say

A New Year’s celebration in the Swiss Alps transformed into unimaginable tragedy early Thursday, as a devastating fire claimed the lives of at least 40 people at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana. The joyous atmosphere of a new year quickly dissolved into chaos and heartbreak.

The blaze erupted around 1:30 a.m. local time, engulfing the venue while it was filled with revelers. Authorities confirmed over 115 injuries, many critically wounded, as emergency services raced to the scene. The sheer scale of the disaster quickly overwhelmed local resources.

Among the seriously injured, at least 22 individuals were between the ages of 16 and 26, representing a devastating loss for an entire generation. The regional government head, Mathias Reynard, expressed the collective grief, stating the evening had morphed from a celebration into a “nightmare.”

Initial reports from witnesses paint a terrifying picture. Two women recounted seeing a bartender carrying a colleague, who held a lit candle within a bottle. This seemingly innocuous act ignited the wooden ceiling, triggering a rapid and catastrophic spread of flames.

Panic seized the crowd as they desperately sought escape. One witness described a harrowing surge towards a narrow staircase and doorway leading from a basement nightclub. Others were forced to smash windows, their cries echoing through the Alpine night.

The scene outside was one of frantic desperation, with parents rushing to the bar, fearing for their children. A young man described the unfolding horror as resembling a scene from a terrifying movie, watching as people struggled to escape the smoke and flames.

Axel Clavier, a 16-year-old from Paris, survived the inferno but mourned the loss of a friend, with others still unaccounted for. He recalled seeing waitresses delivering Champagne with sparklers shortly before the chaos erupted.

Clavier described a suffocating atmosphere, initially hiding under a table before attempting to break a Plexiglas window with a table. He managed to escape through the shattered remains, a harrowing testament to his will to survive.

The local hospital’s intensive care unit and operating theater were rapidly pushed to their limits, unable to accommodate the overwhelming influx of patients. Authorities were forced to seek assistance from Italy, which offered a major burns unit in Milan.

Most of the injured suffered severe burns, covering over 20% of their bodies, with recovery expected to be a long and arduous process, spanning weeks or even months. Thirteen Italian citizens were confirmed among the wounded, with six more still missing.

Investigators believe the fire likely triggered a flashover – a violent ignition of combustible gases – contributing to the rapid and devastating spread of the flames. While the exact cause remains under investigation, authorities have ruled out any act of terrorism.

The number of people inside the bar at the time of the fire remains unknown, a key element of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are working to identify the victims and notify their families, a task that weighs heavily on the devastated community.

The tragedy unfolded in a world-renowned ski resort, attracting tourists from across the globe. Authorities have urged caution in the coming days, mindful of the strain on emergency services during the peak ski season.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin expressed the nation’s sorrow, extending heartfelt condolences to the victims, the injured, and their loved ones. The community, nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps near the Matterhorn, is grappling with an unimaginable loss.

Among those injured is Tahirys Dos Santos, a 19-year-old trainee footballer from FC Metz. The club has rallied around him, offering their support as he battles his injuries, a poignant reminder of the human cost of this tragedy.
