The era of the free airport drop-off is rapidly disappearing. London City Airport, once a haven for drivers wanting a quick, cost-free farewell, will begin charging a fee next week, joining the ranks of other major airports already imposing such levies.
For years, City Airport stood apart, allowing drivers to briefly stop and let passengers out without charge. This convenience is set to end on January 6th, with a £8 fee for a five-minute stay. The airport cites a desire to encourage greater use of public transportation as the reason for the change.
The move follows similar decisions at other London hubs. Gatwick recently announced a record-high £10 drop-off charge, while Heathrow will increase its fee to £7 in the new year. These escalating costs are sparking frustration among travelers and taxi drivers alike.
Taxi drivers are voicing strong opposition, labeling the fees “unjustifiable” and warning that the added expense will inevitably be passed on to passengers. Some fear drivers may even avoid airport runs altogether, impacting service availability.
However, savvy travelers can still find ways to circumvent the charges. At London City Airport, a little local knowledge reveals a hidden advantage: dropping passengers off on the corner of Drew Road and Leonard Street provides direct access to a pedestrian tunnel leading to the terminal in under a minute.
Beyond this specific trick, London City Airport boasts excellent public transport links, with a dedicated Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station offering swift connections to central London and the wider Tube network.
Heathrow offers a free alternative – utilizing the Park & Ride car parks. While requiring a bit more time, these long-stay facilities provide a complimentary shuttle bus service to the terminals, running every fifteen minutes.
Gatwick also provides a free option through its long-stay car parks, allowing up to two hours of free parking and a shuttle bus connection to the terminals. The journey takes approximately ten minutes.
At Stansted, the Mid Stay Car Park offers a free drop-off for up to 60 minutes, though it lacks a direct shuttle, requiring a walk or a connecting bus ride. Luton Airport’s long stay car park provides free parking for up to two hours, with a frequent shuttle service to the terminal.
These alternatives, while potentially requiring a longer journey, offer a way to avoid the increasingly burdensome drop-off fees, allowing travelers to say goodbye without a hefty charge.
