The Broadway community is mourning the loss of Bret Hanna-Shuford, a vibrant performer whose light was extinguished far too soon at the age of 46. Known for captivating audiences in productions ofWicked,Beauty and the Beast, andThe Little Mermaid, Hanna-Shuford’s talent graced both stage and screen.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bret shared his life with warmth and honesty alongside his husband, Stephen Hanna-Shuford, and their three-year-old son, Maverick. Together, they built a devoted online following as “Broadway Husbands,” offering a glimpse into their joys and challenges.
The heartbreaking news of his passing arrived on January 3rd, just five months after a devastating cancer diagnosis. Stephen shared the news with profound grief, describing Bret as “the most amazing man, husband and Papa in the universe,” who departed peacefully surrounded by family.
Bret faced an incredibly rare and aggressive combination of illnesses: hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and peripheral T-cell lymphoma. HLH causes the immune system to attack healthy tissues, while the lymphoma represented a particularly challenging blood cancer.
Throughout his ordeal, Bret and Stephen bravely documented his journey, connecting with over 257,000 followers and receiving an outpouring of support. Even during his most difficult moments, confined to a hospital bed, Bret’s spirit shone through.
A particularly poignant post revealed he had been unconscious for three days in intensive care, yet his longing was simply to return home to his son and husband. “I really miss my son, a lot, and my husband…but I’m sending so much love to you,” he wrote, a testament to his unwavering love.
Born in Beaumont, Texas, in 1979, Bret’s passion for theatre led him to Wagner College, graduating in 2001. His career blossomed with performances on Disney Cruise Line and in numerous acclaimed productions, includingCirque du Soleil’s ParamourandSouth Pacificat Lincoln Center.
His talents extended beyond the stage, with appearances in television shows likeLaw & Order: Special Victims UnitandOnly Murders in the Building, and even a role inThe Wolf of Wall Street. He was a versatile artist, constantly pursuing his craft.
Bret and Stephen’s love story began in 2007, culminating in marriage four years later and the arrival of their beloved son, Maverick, in 2022. He had recently embarked on graduate studies at the University of Florida and was passionately writing a children’s book.
He is survived by his husband, son, parents, Preston and Deanna, and his brothers, Todd, Eric, and Bart. His final online message, shared on December 17th, expressed his deep gratitude for the unwavering support he received.
“I hope you know how much I appreciate you and your support of me through this time,” Bret wrote, a final echo of the kindness and warmth that defined his life and touched so many hearts.
