A shadow has fallen over the world of Dilbert. Creator Scott Adams revealed last May a diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer, a disease that has already spread to his bones.
The news came just a day after another public figure, Joe Biden, disclosed his own battle with prostate cancer. Adams, however, indicated his prognosis was significantly more limited, estimating he might have only weeks or months left.
Recent updates have brought little comfort. Last week, Adams spoke with stark honesty, stating the chances of recovery are “essentially zero.” He detailed the physical toll the cancer is taking, including loss of feeling in his legs and increasing heart failure.
Despite the grim outlook, a profound shift is occurring in Adams’s life. Surrounded by friends, he’s begun a journey toward faith, embracing Christianity after years of identifying as agnostic.
He expressed a newfound respect for those who shared their beliefs with him, acknowledging their genuine care and conviction. Adams described a logical assessment of faith, viewing it as a high-reward, low-risk proposition.
“If it turns out there’s nothing there,” he explained, “I’ve lost nothing…but if it turns out that there is something there (heaven), and the Christian model is the closest to it, I win.”
As Adams prepares for what he anticipates will be a period of transition in January, thoughts and prayers are with him during this deeply personal and challenging time.
He faces his final weeks with a remarkable clarity, a testament to his enduring spirit and a search for meaning in the face of mortality.
