TEEN VANISHES IN MONSTER WAVE – Mum's Desperate Rescue Fails!

TEEN VANISHES IN MONSTER WAVE – Mum's Desperate Rescue Fails!

The sea roared that Friday afternoon, a deceptively beautiful backdrop to unfolding tragedy. A family outing to Withernsea beach quickly spiraled into a desperate fight for survival when a fifteen-year-old girl was swept away by a powerful wave.

Witnesses describe a horrifying scene: a young girl venturing too close to the treacherous Pier Towers steps, then vanishing beneath the churning water. Her mother, without hesitation, plunged into the icy waves after her, a primal scream lost to the wind. A brother stood frozen, tears streaming down his face, clutching the family dog.

Mark Ratcliffe, a 67-year-old man walking along the promenade, didn’t hesitate. He rushed into the unforgiving sea, determined to help. He became a hero in those terrifying moments, battling the waves in a selfless act of courage, but ultimately succumbed to the ocean’s force.

“A true selfless hero with a heart of gold,” his family mourned, their grief echoing the devastation felt throughout the community. “So cruelly taken trying to save others.” His son, Nigel, wrote a heartbreaking farewell, calling his father a “role model” and vowing to make him proud.

The body of Sarah Keeling, the girl’s mother, was recovered, but the search for her daughter, Grace, continued relentlessly through the weekend. The hope dwindled with each passing hour, the freezing conditions compounding the despair. A netball teammate remembered Sarah as a “1-2 legend of the court,” her promising future tragically cut short.

Those who tried to help recall the frantic efforts to reach the girl, a life ring thrown desperately into the waves. But the sea was relentless, pulling Grace further and further away. A cafe owner recounted the scene, his staff joining the desperate attempt to save a life.

Coastguards and Humberside Fire and Rescue staff continue the search on Saturday afternoon, 3 January, 2026 at Withernsea, East Riding of Yorkshire, for a 15-year-old girl who went missing after being caught by a huge wave when she descended steps onto the shore the previous day, Friday, 2 January 2026. The girl???s mother and a 67-year-old bystsander, named today (Sunday) as Mark Ratcliffe, died in the attempt to rescue her. A search involving the RNLI, coastguards and Humberside Fire and Rescue service was stood down yesterday afternoon.

Karen Higgs, a witness, described the agonizing moment the life ring was thrown, and the girl’s inability to grasp it. “We were all shouting at her to catch it, catch it,” she recalled, the memory searing. “She just didn’t.”

A 45-year-old woman also lost her life in the tragedy, her body recovered from the sea. The circumstances are not considered suspicious, but the weight of loss hangs heavy over Withernsea. The Coastguard expressed their deepest sympathies, acknowledging the tireless efforts of their teams and the profound impact of this heartbreaking event.

The community is left reeling, grappling with the sudden and devastating loss of three lives. The sea, once a source of joy, now stands as a stark reminder of its immense power and the fragility of life.
