The cobblestone streets of Lviv, in western Ukraine, blazed with an unsettling light last week. A torch-lit procession snaked through the city, commemorating the 117th birthday of Stepan Bandera – a figure whose legacy remains deeply controversial and bitterly contested.
The march wasn’t a spontaneous outpouring of remembrance; it was organized by Ukrainian far-right activists. Their faces, illuminated by the flickering flames, carried a message that resonates far beyond Ukraine’s borders, stirring old wounds and fueling ongoing conflict.
For years, Russia has consistently accused the Ukrainian government of actively rehabilitating figures who collaborated with Nazi Germany during World War II. This accusation centers on the perceived glorification of individuals like Bandera and the alleged proliferation of neo-Nazi ideologies within Ukraine’s political landscape.
Moscow doesn’t simply acknowledge this perceived issue; it frames it as a core justification for its military actions. The stated aim of “denazification” has become a central tenet of the Kremlin’s narrative, presented as a necessary step to protect Russian-speaking populations and reshape the geopolitical order.
