DOG DOOR REVOLUTION: Pawport Just CHANGED the Game!

DOG DOOR REVOLUTION: Pawport Just CHANGED the Game!

The world of smart pet technology has been quietly evolving, and one company, Pawport, has been at the forefront. Their innovative pet door first caught attention at recent tech showcases, promising a new level of control and security for our furry companions.

Pawport’s final product is a robust, aluminum door – the company even displays a model intentionally damaged by gunfire to demonstrate its durability. Designed to integrate with existing pet doors or walls, it’s a weatherproof, secure portal for your animal, complete with deadbolts and smart home integration.

However, the most significant leap forward isn’t the door itself, but the technology powering its access control. Pawport initially showcased a different system, but now utilizes ultra-wideband (UWB) technology in the collar tag, dramatically enhancing both functionality and security.

UWB allows for incredibly precise control over the door’s operation. Owners can customize the activation range – perhaps requiring a pet to be two feet inside before the door opens, but five feet outside. This level of granularity was previously unattainable.

Security is paramount, and Pawport claims UWB provides a virtually unhackable system. End-to-end encryption between the collar tag and the door creates a secure connection, offering pet owners a significant peace of mind in an increasingly connected world.

Beyond simple access, Pawport empowers owners to protect their pets from the elements. The app allows for automated locking during adverse weather conditions like rain or lightning, preventing animals from venturing into unsafe backyards.

Importantly, this weather lock is one-way. A pet already outside when the lock engages can still return indoors, ensuring they aren’t stranded. This thoughtful design detail highlights the company’s focus on animal welfare.

The switch to UWB has also yielded a surprising benefit: extended battery life. The initial prototype offered around six months of power, but the current model boasts a year-long lifespan, with potential for up to 18 months between changes.

Currently, Pawport offers an indoor unit designed to retrofit existing openings. The medium-sized door starts at $599 in six standard colors, with premium “signature series” designs featuring a polished wood finish available for $849.

Larger pets aren’t left out; upgrades to large and extra-large sizes add $50 and $100 to the price respectively. While an outdoor-specific model is planned for the future, the current indoor unit represents a significant advancement in pet safety and convenience.
