CES 2026: Sony's Keynote Was All About Electric Cars

CES 2026: Sony's Keynote Was All About Electric Cars

The buzz at this year’s tech showcase wasn’t about incremental upgrades, but a bold leap into the future of driving. Sony unveiled Afeela, an electric vehicle born from a collaboration with Honda, signaling a shift from teasing concepts to a tangible reality on the road.

For years, Sony hinted at a car that wasn’t just transportation, but an extension of its entertainment ecosystem. Now, that vision is crystallizing. Initial previews weren’t focused on typical car specs, but on seamless integration with services like Crunchyroll and customizable interior themes reflecting beloved Sony brands.

The Afeela’s ambitions extend far beyond aesthetics. Sony is developing “Afeela Intelligent Drive,” aiming for Level 4+ autonomous capability – true self-driving within defined areas. While not immediately available, this commitment demonstrates a serious pursuit of usability and a future where driving is effortless.

Sony Afeela future concept

Imagine a commute transformed into a personalized entertainment experience. Sony envisions riders relaxing while the car navigates, immersed in PlayStation games or other content. This isn’t a futuristic fantasy; PlayStation Remote Play is already confirmed for the Afeela, demonstrated live on stage with a PS5 controller.

Sony isn’t abandoning its core strengths. The Afeela will feature customizable touchscreen themes based on popular franchises like Astro Bot and Gran Turismo. But the company is taking personalization further with the “Afeela Co-Creation Program,” empowering developers to build custom apps and even alter the car’s motor sound.

Japanese music producer Tomoko Ida showcased a custom motor sound, transforming the vehicle’s hum into a dramatic THX-style experience. This program, surprisingly, will even offer developers payment in cryptocurrency, signaling an open and innovative approach to vehicle customization.

The Afeela is moving from concept to concrete production. Deliveries are slated to begin this year, initially in California, with Arizona following in 2027 and Japan also in 2027. The first models, dubbed Afeela 1, are already in pre-production, representing a significant milestone.

While the initial rollout is limited geographically, Sony is offering test drives to those who have already registered their interest. This marks a pivotal moment, transitioning from anticipation to actual experience for potential buyers.

The Afeela feels distinctly different from traditional automobiles – more akin to a sophisticated gadget than a conventional vehicle. It sparks a question: could this be a glimpse of what the Apple Car might have been? Despite the sleek design, the interior remains recognizably automotive.

Sony isn’t stopping with the Afeela 1. The “Afeela Prototype 2026” was unveiled, promising “greater spatial flexibility and accessibility.” This hints at a future where the car becomes a truly mobile and immersive entertainment hub, blurring the lines between transportation and leisure.
