Trump, now 79, has consistently questioned the mental acuity of political opponents, particularly former President Joe Biden. Reports detailing a perceived decline in Biden’s cognitive abilities have fueled these attacks, extending to doubts about other Democratic figures.
At a recent GOP retreat, Trump directly challenged the ability of several prominent Democrats to pass a cognitive test. He specifically questioned whether Vice President Kamala Harris, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and California Governor Gavin Newsom could succeed, implying a lack of mental sharpness.
Responses to Trump’s challenge were varied. Spokespeople for Harris and Walz offered no immediate comment. However, a spokesperson for Newsom responded with a dismissive series of laughs, offering no substantive reply.
Trump frames mandatory cognitive exams as a safeguard against “STUPID” or “INCOMPETENT PEOPLE!” holding positions of power. He highlighted his own repeated success on the tests, claiming to have “ACED” the most recent one with a perfect score – a feat he asserts no previous president or vice president has attempted.
The former president acknowledged a paradoxical situation surrounding his own health disclosures. He feels scrutinized whether he submits to medical examinations or avoids them, facing criticism either way.
Recent concerns about Trump’s health have centered on visible bruising on his hands and reports of swollen ankles. He expressed regret over undergoing a CT scan in October, believing the results provided fodder for those questioning his well-being.
Trump clarified that the October examination involved a CT scan, a quicker procedure, rather than a more comprehensive MRI. He believes the scan inadvertently supplied “ammunition” to his critics.
Following his annual physical, the White House physician, Navy Capt. Sean Barbabella, publicly stated that Trump “remains in excellent health.” However, questions persist despite this assessment.
