A surge of federal prosecutors is heading to Minnesota, intensifying a sprawling investigation into alleged fraud connected to nonprofit organizations. Attorney General Bondi announced the Justice Department’s commitment to bringing those responsible for what officials are calling a widespread scheme to justice.
The investigation initially surfaced under the previous administration, revealing a $250 million fraud allegedly perpetrated by a Minnesota-based nonprofit, Feeding Our Future. This organization exploited taxpayer-funded child nutrition programs, marking what was described as the “largest pandemic relief fraud to date.”
Bondi has signaled an escalation of the effort, promising “severe consequences” and a readiness to extend the prosecutorial reinforcements to other states where similar schemes are suspected. The department believes the true scale of the fraud is even larger than initially estimated, with more charges anticipated.
To date, 98 individuals have been charged in connection with the Minnesota fraud cases, resulting in 64 convictions. A significant majority of those charged are of Somali descent, a detail that has ignited controversy and accusations of targeted enforcement.
The focus on the Somali community in Minnesota, numbering around 100,000, predates the current investigation. Critics allege a pattern of heightened immigration enforcement and potential denaturalization efforts directed towards this population, characterizing it as a xenophobic campaign.
The Department of Health and Human Services has also taken action, freezing billions in federal funding for childcare and social services in five states, including Minnesota, pending investigations into the proper use of taxpayer funds. This move underscores the gravity of the concerns surrounding program integrity.
Public attention was further amplified by a viral video posted online, showcasing visits to Somali-run daycare centers that appeared to be closed despite receiving funding. The video garnered millions of views, sparking debate and prompting responses from some centers disputing allegations of wrongdoing.
