A stunning revelation has shaken the Ohio gubernatorial race. Justin Salsburey, the man entrusted with protecting leading Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, was arrested on federal drug trafficking charges just weeks ago.
The arrest followed a search of Salsburey’s home, where authorities discovered a disturbing cache of illegal substances. Methamphetamine, pills laced with fentanyl, and even MDMA were seized, alongside performance-enhancing steroids.
Investigators allege a significant operation, tracing 261 packages of narcotics received by Salsburey between August 2024 and December 2025. The shipments reportedly arrived at his residence, raising questions about the extent of his alleged criminal activity.
Salsburey, 43, was taken into custody alongside his wife, Ruthann Rankin, a bodybuilder. Court documents reveal some of the drugs were hidden within containers for nicotine pouches, a detail highlighting the alleged sophistication of their operation.
Ramaswamy’s campaign responded swiftly, stating the family was “alarmed” by the news. The private security firm providing Salsburey’s services immediately removed him from the protective detail upon learning of the allegations.
Despite the gravity of the charges, the security firm emphasized that Salsburey had previously passed multiple background checks. These included screenings by the firm itself, as well as investigations conducted by both the FBI and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Federal authorities first became aware of the alleged drug dealing in November 2025, receiving information from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office about the couple’s incoming shipments. Postal inspectors in Columbus initiated the investigation that ultimately led to the arrests.
Vivek Ramaswamy currently holds a strong lead in the polls against his Democratic opponent, Amy Acton. He recently secured an endorsement from former President Trump and announced Ohio Senate President Rob McColley as his running mate.
The Ohio gubernatorial election is scheduled for November, and this scandal introduces a jarring element into a closely watched race. The implications of a compromised security detail for a leading candidate are significant and continue to unfold.
