SHUTTERS OF DEATH: Viral Sensation Tragically Falls Victim!

The world briefly held its breath, then erupted in laughter, watching an elderly woman named Anne Hughes become unexpectedly airborne. It happened outside a small shop in Wales, caught on video as she was hoisted upwards by the rising security shutters – a scene of comical chaos that quickly went viral.

Anne, waiting patiently as the shopkeeper began opening for the day, never anticipated becoming a human pendulum. Her coat snagged, and with a gentle but relentless pull, the shutters began to lift her, her shopping trolley her only anchor to the ground. She clung on, a picture of bewildered determination, as she ascended.

The shopkeeper, hearing her cries, reacted swiftly, lowering the shutters and bringing Anne safely back to earth. The video, shared online, amassed over 100 million views, transforming Anne into an overnight sensation.

But behind the viral fame was a woman with a remarkable spirit. Friends remember Anne as lovely and possessing a wonderful sense of humor. She embraced her newfound notoriety, finding joy in the shared laughter and even posing for selfies with amused onlookers beside the very shutters that had given her an unexpected lift.

“It could only happen to me,” she reportedly said, with a characteristic twinkle in her eye. “I was embarrassed, who wouldn’t be? But looking back I can see the funny side.” She found herself declining invitations to appear on popular television shows, preferring the quiet comfort of family life.

The story took a poignant turn with the news of Anne’s passing after a cancer diagnosis. Yet, her legacy isn’t one of sadness, but of enduring amusement. A local graffiti artist immortalized the moment, painting a vibrant mural of Anne suspended upside down on the shop’s shutters – a lasting tribute to her accidental fame.

“It’s sad that she’s gone,” a friend shared, “but she has left us with a memory that will always bring a smile to people’s faces.” Anne Hughes, the woman who briefly defied gravity, will forever be remembered as a symbol of resilience, good humor, and the unexpected joys life can deliver.

Her story serves as a gentle reminder that even in the most ordinary of moments, there’s always room for a little bit of magic – and a whole lot of laughter.

A grandmother who went viral after being hoisted 10ft into the air on a shop shutter has died two years later. Anne Hughes, 73 (pictured) was left dangling outside the village shop and footage of the incident was viewed over 100 million times on TikTok and other sites. Anne was stood outside the store with her shopping trolley when shopkeeper Amir Akram opened the electronic shutters and her coat became entangled. Mr Akram was unaware Anne was outside being lifted off the ground until he heard her cries for help. A 31-second clip showed him running to the mother-of-three's aid and lowering the shutters of the Best One shop. Anne was returned to land unharmed and laughed about her experience at the shop where she worked as a part time cleaner in Tonteg, near Pontypridd, South Wales. She joked: "It could only happen to me. "I was embarrassed, who wouldn't be? But looking back I can see the funny side. "And I've quite enjoyed the fame, people ask me for selfies next to the shutters." But Anne, who had been battling cancer, tragically died in hospital shortly before Christmas with her family at her bedside. A family friend said: "Anne was lovely and, luckily for her and everyone else, she had a good sense of humour. "She quite enjoyed her moment of notoriety and she definitely saw the funny side. "It's sad that she's gone but she has left us with a memory that will always bring a smile to people's faces." Anne was immortalised in an artwork outside the shop and the BBC confirmed the video was the most watched on its site of all time. But she turned down numerous approaches to appear on TV including shows like Good Morning Britain and The Big Fat Quiz of the Year as she got on with her family life. WALES NEWS SERVICE
