A chilling discovery in Pennsylvania has unfolded, revealing a scene authorities have described as a “horror movie come to life.” Jonathan Gerlach, 34, now faces hundreds of charges after police uncovered a macabre collection of human remains – over 100 full or partial sets – within his home and a storage unit.
The investigation began with a series of disturbing incidents at Mount Moriah Cemetery, just outside Philadelphia. Reports of burglarized graves and mausoleums led detectives to focus on Gerlach, ultimately leading to his arrest this week.
Tuesday evening, surveillance at the cemetery yielded a horrifying sight: Gerlach’s car, its backseat openly displaying bones and skulls. He was observed leaving the grounds carrying a burlap bag, a crowbar, and other tools, quickly taken into custody.
Initially, Gerlach confessed to stealing around 30 sets of human remains. However, the scope of his actions quickly escalated as investigators searched his property. The true extent of the collection was far more disturbing than anyone imagined.
Authorities are now painstakingly working to identify the remains, which range from months-old infants to individuals who died centuries ago. The sheer volume and age of the bones present a monumental task for medical examiners.
District Attorney Tanner Rouse expressed the shock felt by everyone involved, stating that no one had ever encountered a scene of this magnitude. The investigation is ongoing, with the number of recovered remains still being tallied.
Gerlach is currently charged with over 450 counts, including abuse of corpse, theft, and receiving stolen property. Bail has been set at $1 million, and an arraignment is scheduled for later this month.
The discovery has understandably caused immense distress and grief within the community. Rouse acknowledged the pain felt by those fearing their loved ones may be among the recovered remains, offering his condolences during this incredibly difficult time.
