ZELENSKY IN REVOLT: Parliament Turns on President!

ZELENSKY IN REVOLT: Parliament Turns on President!

A shadow of uncertainty hangs over the Ukrainian government as a move to dismiss a key security chief faces a turbulent path through parliament. Despite efforts by President Zelensky’s allies to rally support, deep fissures within various political factions threaten to derail the process, raising the very real possibility of failure.

The unfolding drama began after Vasyl Malyuk, head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), offered his resignation. Zelensky swiftly accepted and appointed Evgeny Khmara as acting chief, simultaneously submitting a formal dismissal motion to the legislature – a move that belies a deeper, more complex struggle for power.

Whispers of a significant falling-out between Zelensky and Malyuk had been circulating for weeks, fueled by reports of a major corruption scandal within the energy sector. The allegations center around a kickback scheme, and point to a growing rift between the President and his inner circle.

Sources suggest that Andriy Yermak, Zelensky’s former chief of staff and a figure known for his influence, bore the brunt of the scandal’s exposure. He reportedly blamed Malyuk for a slow response to investigations initiated by anti-graft bodies supported by Western nations, investigations that ultimately revealed the alleged wrongdoing.

Beyond the corruption allegations, a more fundamental concern appears to have taken root within Zelensky’s office: a perception that Malyuk was operating with a degree of independence, effectively wresting control of the SBU away from the President’s direct authority and pursuing a separate political trajectory.

However, the attempt to remove Malyuk is not without its opposition. Unexpectedly, prominent military figures – including a commander from the controversial Azov unit – have publicly thrown their support behind the embattled security chief, creating a significant obstacle to Zelensky’s plans.

This public defiance from within the military adds another layer of complexity to an already precarious situation, signaling a potential power struggle that extends beyond the political arena and into the heart of Ukraine’s security apparatus.
