A new vision of a classic has emerged from Beijing – the Smart #2. This isn’t simply an update; it’s a bold reimagining of the iconic city car that captivated a generation in the 1990s, promising to redefine urban mobility.
Wolfgang Ufer, CEO of Smart Europe, describes the #2 as a complete “reinvention.” He emphasizes the collaborative spirit behind its creation, born from the passion and creativity of Mercedes-Benz’s design team. The goal? To deliver a vehicle perfectly attuned to the lives of European drivers.
The original Smart was a masterclass in minimalist design, engineered to occupy the smallest possible footprint. This new iteration builds on that legacy, though it’s slightly larger than competitors like the Citroën Ami and Microlino, officially categorized as electric quadricycles.
Despite its remarkably compact size – measuring under 2.8 metres in length – the Smart #2 doesn’t compromise on performance. Anticipated range reaches an impressive 186 miles on a single charge, making it ideal for daily commutes and city adventures.
For those moments when time is of the essence, the #2 boasts rapid charging capabilities. A quick 20-minute charge can boost the battery from 10% to 80%, minimizing downtime and maximizing convenience. Details regarding top speed are still forthcoming.
First unveiled in China, the concept car is generating significant buzz before its official production debut at the Paris Motor Show later this year. It represents a clear statement of intent: Smart is back, and it’s ready to reshape the future of urban driving.
