Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced that a software error in New Jersey’s motor vehicle system had registered thousands of non‑citizens as voters between June 2023 and June 2024.
The glitch allowed roughly 6,600 individuals to be added to the voter rolls, even though they answered “no” to citizenship questions when applying for driver’s licenses.
Preliminary analysis indicates fewer than 400 of those newly registered voters cast ballots, with registrations spread across Democratic, Republican, and unaffiliated categories.
Sherrill ordered an investigation into the incident, the removal of the incorrectly added voters, and the replacement of the vendor responsible for the system.
She criticized the federal administration’s approach to election integrity, arguing that it has eroded public confidence in the electoral process.
