TRUMP WARNS: UK Deal JEOPARDIZES America's STRONGEST Military Fortress!

A stunning reversal unfolded as former President Donald Trump vehemently opposed a United Kingdom plan to return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. His intervention wasn't simply about territorial disputes; it centered on the strategic importance of the Diego Garcia military base and potential geopolitical ramifications.

Trump unleashed a scathing critique on his social media platform, labeling the U.K.’s decision “an act of great stupidity.” He argued that relinquishing control of Diego Garcia, a critical U.S. military asset, was a display of weakness that would not go unnoticed by rivals like China and Russia.

The shift in stance reveals what one defense expert termed a “new Trump Doctrine.” This strategy, outlined in a recent National Security Strategy, appears to prioritize securing key strategic locations and challenging perceived vulnerabilities in alliances.

The Chagos Islands’ history is rooted in Britain’s decolonization of Mauritius. The International Court of Justice deemed the separation unlawful in 2019, prompting the U.K. to agree to a transfer of sovereignty while maintaining a long-term lease for Diego Garcia – a lease costing at least $160 million per year.

Diego Garcia serves as a vital hub for U.S. military operations, supporting long-range bombers, logistics, and power projection across vast regions including the Middle East, Indo-Pacific, and Africa. Approximately 2,500 personnel, predominantly American, are stationed there.

The core concern driving Trump’s opposition is the potential for Mauritius, once holding full sovereignty, to alter the lease agreement or even offer the islands to China. Such a move would dramatically shift the balance of power in the Indian Ocean.

Control of the Chagos Islands impacts vital shipping lanes. Nearly 23.7 million barrels of oil traverse the Indian Ocean daily, and Diego Garcia is considered crucial in any potential conflict involving Taiwan and China’s ambitions in the region.

Trump explicitly connected the Chagos dispute to his previous interest in acquiring Greenland, suggesting that the U.K.’s willingness to cede territory demonstrates a pattern of questionable national security judgment. He believes acquiring Greenland is essential for similar reasons.

Experts warn that even with Mauritius’ current assurances of a 99-year lease, the situation remains precarious. Once de jure sovereignty is transferred, Mauritius could renegotiate terms or even terminate the agreement, jeopardizing U.S. access.

Beyond the base itself, control of the surrounding exclusive economic zone presents another risk. Chinese fishing fleets could gain access to rich fishing grounds, potentially complicating U.S. Air Force operations and further escalating tensions in the region.
