FRANK ON THE BRINK: Tottenham's Reign of Error Continues!

FRANK ON THE BRINK: Tottenham's Reign of Error Continues!

I remember the hollow ache of that night in 2023 with painful clarity. Standing near the tunnel, under the Cyprus flag, I watched AC Milan’s supporters celebrate as if they were already lifting the Champions League trophy. It should have been *us* celebrating, hosting a crucial knockout stage return leg, brimming with hope.

We had Harry Kane, a striker capable of the extraordinary, linked telepathically with Heung-Min Son. We had recent Champions League experience, and a manager in Antonio Conte who, on paper, possessed world-class credentials. Yet, the most memorable aspect of the evening was the pre-match light show – a dazzling display that outshone the team’s performance.

Tottenham were strangely passive, offering almost no attacking threat. The stadium fell silent long before halftime, a disheartening silence that wasn’t born of quiet support. The Milan fans, however, were relentless, their energy a stark reminder of our failure. If we couldn’t summon the passion for a Champions League round of 16 tie, what was the point of striving for anything at all?

Eighteen days later, Conte publicly criticized his players as “selfish” and departed. While his tactical acumen was undeniable, his attitude – a sense of entitlement that suggested we should be grateful for his presence – grated on me from the beginning. A degree of arrogance can be beneficial in a manager, a defiant belief in the face of doubt.

But arrogance without results is a dangerous combination, a toxic brew that quickly sours the atmosphere. The swift downfall of Russell Martin at Rangers serves as a recent example. He was a thoughtful, principled manager, but ultimately, something didn’t connect.

Managers must learn to navigate the delicate balance between conviction and public perception. A seemingly minor detail, like a refusal to wear a tie on the touchline, can instantly alienate a fanbase steeped in tradition. Rangers supporters value their history; bending the rules is acceptable, but understanding them is paramount.

This is why Manchester United’s appointment of Michael Carrick felt so right to their supporters. There’s often ridicule directed at United for favoring those who “know the club,” but when you’re tasked with upholding a legacy, that institutional knowledge is invaluable. It buys you time, and a degree of understanding.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s initial reign echoed this sentiment. His symbolic gesture of avoiding ‘Sir Alex’s parking space’ might have seemed trivial, but it spoke volumes about his humility and respect for the club’s history – qualities the fans readily embraced. It wasn’t just about gestures, though; United, under Carrick, briefly resembled the teams of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Tottenham fans crave attacking, flowing football, a style that embodies “doing things with a flourish,” as the legendary Danny Blanchflower once said. Nuno Espirito Santo’s pragmatic, results-oriented approach, so successful at Wolves, was never going to resonate at Tottenham.

Thomas Frank was brought in with a similar pragmatic philosophy, a belief that defensive solidity would allow the team to punch above its weight. The logic was sound, but it hasn’t translated to success. Deep down, I suspected it wouldn’t. The fans are disillusioned, evidenced by the 10,000 empty seats on Tuesday night.

A single victory over Borussia Dortmund won’t magically restore faith. Frank has remained dignified and true to his principles, lacking the ‘club DNA’ of others, but possessing a genuine humility. The question now is whether his pragmatism can evolve to consistently deliver the kind of performances Tottenham fans demand. Or is it, sadly, too late?
