President Zelenskyy characterized the meetings as “constructive,” revealing the presence of both political and military representatives from all three nations. Discussions delved into critical security concerns, notably the necessity of American monitoring and oversight as a potential safeguard in any future agreement.
The delegations agreed to return to their respective capitals to present a comprehensive report on the negotiations and to coordinate subsequent actions with their leadership. A follow-up meeting is tentatively scheduled for next week, signaling a commitment to continued dialogue.
These developments followed a separate, four-hour meeting in Moscow between President Putin and a U.S. delegation including Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. The discussions were described as “extremely frank,” with U.S. officials providing updates on conversations held with Ukrainian and European counterparts.
A central point of contention, as highlighted by a Kremlin aide, remains the territorial issue. The Russian side emphasized the need to address territorial claims based on a previously discussed framework, hinting at expectations regarding the Donbas region.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, the conflict continues to rage. Ukraine is enduring relentless attacks, with President Zelenskyy reporting over 1,700 drone attacks, 1,380 guided bombs, and 69 missile strikes in the past week alone.
The strikes are deliberately targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, critical services, and civilian areas, plunging over a million Ukrainians into darkness amidst freezing winter temperatures. The situation is dire, with widespread power outages impacting essential services.
In response to the escalating crisis, the European Commission is deploying nearly 450 emergency generators to restore power to hospitals, shelters, and other vital facilities. The EU’s commitment is clear: to prevent Russia from crippling Ukraine through a campaign of cold and darkness.
