STEWART ABANDONS AMERICA: Is This the Beginning of the Exodus?

STEWART ABANDONS AMERICA: Is This the Beginning of the Exodus?

Kristen Stewart, a name synonymous with captivating performances from “Panic Room” to “Spencer,” is now contemplating a profound shift – leaving the United States. The reason? A growing unease with the direction her country is taking under the current administration and its chilling effect on the creative landscape.

Stewart’s concern isn’t abstract. It stems from concrete threats to the film industry, specifically a proposed 100% tariff on movies made outside the US, labeled a “National Security threat.” While the policy has faded from immediate headlines, the underlying sentiment – a closing of borders and a stifling of artistic expression – deeply worries her.

“Reality is breaking completely under Trump,” Stewart stated, a stark assessment of the current climate. She sees a need to actively shape the future, mirroring a tactic she attributes to the former president himself: “We should take a page out of his book and create the reality we want to live in.”

Her directorial debut, “The Chronology of Water,” filmed entirely in Latvia, became a necessity born of this anxiety. Stewart explains, “It would have been impossible [to make The Chronology of Water] in the States.” The film, a biographical drama starring Imogen Poots, explores a woman finding her voice through writing and swimming, a powerful metaphor for self-discovery and liberation.

The actress doesn’t shy away from speaking her mind, having been politically vocal for years. Now, she’s openly considering a future based outside the US, balancing her life between Los Angeles and New York. Her ambition isn’t to abandon filmmaking, but to redirect it.

“I can’t work freely [in the U.S.], but I don’t want to give up completely,” she declared. “I’d like to make movies in Europe and then shove them down the throat of the American people.” It’s a defiant statement, fueled by a desire to challenge the prevailing narrative and offer alternative perspectives.

Stewart’s experience as a woman in the industry further fuels her frustration. She bluntly observes that actresses are often treated with disrespect, while directors are automatically granted an aura of authority. “People think anyone could be an actress,” she said, contrasting it with the reverence afforded to directors, an idea she attributes to ingrained patriarchal structures.

This isn’t a new battle for Stewart. She recalls a bizarre and “insane” public feud with Trump years ago, stemming from a personal scandal. He publicly criticized her after a relationship issue, a moment she now views with chilling clarity in light of his political rise. She even playfully addressed the history during a hosting gig on “Saturday Night Live,” turning the tables with sharp wit.

Stewart isn’t alone in this sentiment. A growing number of prominent figures, including James Cameron, Robin Wright, Ellen DeGeneres, and Rosie O’Donnell, have already relocated, citing political concerns. O’Donnell, now residing in Ireland, openly attributes her move to the current US political landscape, even facing a retaliatory threat from Trump regarding her citizenship.

The actress’s potential departure represents more than just a personal decision; it’s a symptom of a larger exodus, a quiet rebellion by those who fear for the future of creativity and freedom of expression in a rapidly changing world. It’s a story of artists seeking refuge, and a powerful statement about the state of the nation.
