The city of Minneapolis is reeling after the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse and veteran advocate, during protests against ICE raids. The incident has ignited widespread outrage and prompted a significant shift in federal personnel assigned to the area.
Gregory Bovino, a Border Patrol Commander, and other officials are being replaced by Tom Homan, known as Trump’s ‘border tsar.’ This move follows accusations and mounting public pressure surrounding the circumstances of Pretti’s death, which occurred while he was filming the ICE operation.
A disturbing account from a witness, a doctor at the scene, alleges that ICE agents appeared to be “counting his bullet wounds” instead of providing immediate medical assistance. The doctor’s sworn declaration details a shocking lack of standard emergency procedures, raising serious questions about the agents’ response.
The Department of Homeland Security has vehemently denied these claims, stating that two Border Patrol agents, both certified emergency medical technicians, immediately administered aid. However, the initial report from the scene paints a starkly different picture.
Emerging evidence suggests a possible tragic error may have initiated the shooting. Video footage appears to show an ICE agent retreating with Pretti’s own firearm, which then discharged unexpectedly. This initial shot could have triggered a cascade of reactions among other agents.
The phenomenon of “contagious fire” – the increased likelihood of officers firing after hearing gunfire, even if mistaken – is being examined as a potential factor. However, verified video footage clearly shows Pretti never brandished his weapon, and the shooting occurred moments after he was incapacitated by a chemical irritant.
Rob Doar, President of the Minnesota Gun Owners Law Centre, believes a “negligent discharge” by an agent handling Pretti’s weapon is the most likely explanation. His analysis of the videos points to the agent in a grey jacket as the source of the initial, accidental shot.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that Pretti was a lawful gun owner with a valid permit to carry. He has appealed for calm from both the public and federal law enforcement, recognizing the volatile nature of the situation.
The shooting has sparked intense anger, with crowds confronting federal officers and demanding they leave the city. The loss of a respected nurse, dedicated to caring for veterans, has deeply shaken the community and fueled calls for accountability.
