A chilling wave of threats has surfaced in West Virginia, culminating in the arrest of a young man accused of plotting violence against both government agents and political opponents. Cody Smith, 20, now faces serious charges after authorities uncovered disturbing videos he allegedly posted online.
The investigation began with a threats complaint received by the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department on January 19th. Troopers quickly discovered videos where Smith reportedly detailed plans to attack and kill agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), even contacting the Department of Homeland Security with his menacing intentions.
But the scope of Smith’s alleged threats extended far beyond law enforcement. Investigators found previous social media posts revealing a broader intent to inflict violence on individuals simply for their beliefs. He allegedly vowed to “murder Trump supporters and or war supporters, or service members willing to ‘bootlick’,” according to reports.
The accusations don’t stop there; Smith also reportedly threatened former President Donald Trump directly in the videos. He is currently held at the North Central Regional Jail on a $75,000 bond, awaiting further legal proceedings.
This case emerges alongside another unsettling incident in the state. Morgan L. Morrow, a librarian in Ripley, West Virginia, was arrested on Sunday, accused of attempting to recruit assassins online with the specific goal of targeting President Trump.
The alleged recruitment effort came to light after a video surfaced, reportedly posted by Morrow, containing a disturbing request: “Surely a sniper with a terminal illness cannot be a big ask out of 343 million.” The post quickly gained attention, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
The Jackson County Public Library, where Morrow was employed, swiftly condemned her alleged actions, stating that her views do not reflect the organization’s values or standards. They emphasized a commitment to professionalism, respect, and integrity, and confirmed an internal investigation is underway.
These two separate, yet equally alarming, cases highlight a growing concern over the escalation of violent rhetoric and the potential for real-world consequences fueled by online extremism. Both individuals are now facing the full weight of the law for their alleged actions and threats.
