A chilling scene unfolded in broad daylight in the southern Philippines as a rocket-propelled grenade slammed into a convoy, narrowly missing a local mayor. The attack, occurring around 6:30 a.m. in Maguindanao del Sur province, sent shockwaves through the region and underscored the ever-present dangers faced by political figures there.
Mayor Akmad Ampatuan was traveling in a bulletproof vehicle when the ambush occurred. Dramatic video footage captured the brazen assault, revealing two figures emerging from a white van – one armed with what appeared to be an RPG launcher, the other with a handgun. Their movements were swift and calculated, suggesting a meticulously planned operation.
The video shows the attacker lowering the launcher, aiming down the road, and firing. Almost immediately after the blast, a black SUV rounded the corner and bore the full brunt of the explosion. A subsequent volley of gunfire also struck a pickup truck providing security for the mayor.
A swift response from police and military forces led to a pursuit, culminating in the deaths of three suspected attackers. The operation demonstrated a determined effort to neutralize the immediate threat, but questions surrounding the motive for the attack remained unanswered.
Despite the violence, Mayor Ampatuan emerged unharmed, a testament to the protective measures in place. His executive assistant confirmed the mayor’s safety, while noting that two members of his security detail sustained injuries – thankfully, none were life-threatening.
This wasn’t the first time Mayor Ampatuan has faced a deadly threat. He has reportedly survived two previous assassination attempts in the last five years, painting a picture of a political leader operating under constant risk and highlighting the volatile environment in the region.
