The night of August 1, 2022, ended in tragedy on Steeles Avenue East. A reckless decision, fueled by alcohol, irrevocably altered the lives of several individuals and claimed the life of one.
Rahil Patel stood in a downtown courtroom, admitting guilt to impaired driving causing death and impaired driving causing bodily harm. His actions that night resulted in the death of Prapananth Logeswaran, 41, and severe injuries to his passenger, Tharun Thavendran.
Patel was behind the wheel of his father’s white Mercedes, speeding and weaving through traffic on the two-lane road. Witnesses described a vehicle moving with dangerous abandon, rapidly closing the distance on other cars.
As Patel approached the crest of a hill, he inexplicably veered into the oncoming lane. There was no time for Prapananth Logeswaran to react as the Mercedes collided head-on with his Toyota.
The impact was catastrophic. Logeswaran was pronounced dead at the scene, the force of the crash leaving the engine of his car resting in his lap. It was a scene of utter devastation.
Patel’s Mercedes erupted in flames, trapping both him and Thavendran inside. Two courageous bystanders rushed forward, risking their own safety to pull the occupants from the burning wreckage.
Thavendran was rescued first, followed by Patel, whose skin was reportedly peeling from his hands due to the severity of his burns as he was pulled free. Both men were rushed to hospital with critical injuries.
A blood sample taken at the hospital revealed a blood alcohol content of 92 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood, taken over an hour after the crash. Experts estimated Patel’s BAC was likely between 92 and 122 at the moment of impact.
Thavendran endured a hip fracture and a long, arduous rehabilitation. Patel spent months in a rehab hospital, facing the consequences of his choices and ultimately being formally charged in November 2022.
The Crown is seeking an eight-year prison sentence and a lifetime driving prohibition. The defense argues for a two-year conditional sentence served in the community, coupled with a three-year driving ban. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for April, where the fate of Rahil Patel will be determined.
