AIRFARE WAR IMMINENT: European Giant Invades America!

A new contender is poised to disrupt transatlantic air travel. Wizz Air, a major European discounter, has quietly filed plans to launch flights between the U.S. and the U.K., hinting at broader ambitions for scheduled service in the future.

While currently the third-largest airline in Europe by seat capacity, Wizz Air remains largely unknown to American travelers. Unlike its more boisterous rivals, Ryanair and EasyJet, it lacks a high-profile leader or decades of brand recognition on this side of the Atlantic.

However, Wizz Air possesses a surprising connection to the American aviation landscape. Founded in 2004, the airline is backed by Indigo Partners, a Phoenix-based private equity firm that also controls significant stakes in U.S. carriers Frontier Airlines, and airlines in South America and Mexico.

The initial phase would involve charter flights operated by Wizz Air UK. But the airline’s application to regulators reveals a clear desire to eventually offer regularly scheduled transatlantic routes, potentially shaking up the established order.

Currently, Wizz Air’s long-haul capability is limited to the Airbus A321XLR. This single-aisle aircraft, configured for a dense 239 all-economy seats, might present a comfort challenge for extended flights across the Atlantic.

Wizz Air UK currently has three A321XLRs and eighteen A321neos in its fleet, opening possibilities for routes from its U.K. bases at London Gatwick and Luton Airports to destinations in the northeastern United States.

The history of budget airlines attempting this route is fraught with difficulty. Recent failures, like Icelandic carrier Play Airlines, and the collapses of Norwegian Air and Wow Air before the pandemic, serve as cautionary tales.

Yet, the timing could be advantageous. Europe’s major airline groups are consolidating, absorbing smaller competitors. This creates an opening for a new, low-cost option to challenge the increasingly concentrated market.

Wizz Air isn’t without its own hurdles. A recent closure of its Abu Dhabi subsidiary demonstrates the risks of ambitious expansion. Furthermore, engine issues with its Airbus fleet have temporarily grounded a significant portion of its aircraft.

Despite these challenges, Wizz Air’s entry into the transatlantic arena promises to inject much-needed competition. The airline’s unique ownership structure and aggressive pricing strategy could redefine how people travel between the U.S. and Europe.
