A quiet street in Southampton became a scene of terror when a man, later identified as Azzedvie Mahmoudi, launched a frenzied attack on unsuspecting passersby with a kitchen knife. The unfolding drama, captured on CCTV, would soon reveal extraordinary acts of courage from ordinary citizens.
Mahmoudi, a former maths teacher, had tragically stopped taking medication for paranoid schizophrenia, plunging him into a state of ‘florid psychosis.’ This descent into mental instability fueled a terrifying rampage that demanded immediate intervention.
Among the first to react was Sohail Chowdhary, a martial arts instructor known to many from his appearance on a popular television program. Without hesitation, Chowdhary sprang into action, becoming a crucial figure in preventing further harm.
The scene was chaotic. One man bravely used a shopping trolley as a shield, attempting to create distance between himself and the attacker. Mahmoudi, relentless in his assault, tripped and lunged with the knife, but Chowdhary intervened, pulling the man to safety.
Chowdhary didn’t stop there. He pursued Mahmoudi, acting as a beacon for both the public and approaching police. He threw objects to distract the attacker, urgently warned others to flee, and skillfully directed law enforcement towards the immediate threat.
A desperate attempt by a motorist to halt Mahmoudi with their car was quickly averted by Chowdhary, who shouted for them to stand down, prioritizing the safety of everyone involved. His clear thinking and decisive actions were instrumental in controlling the escalating situation.
Police arrived with tasers, and after a tense standoff, Mahmoudi finally complied, dropping the knives to the ground. The immediate danger had passed, but the impact of the attack resonated deeply within the community.
Investigating officer DC Ryan Mitchell emphasized the pivotal role played by the courageous bystanders. “The fact no one was more seriously hurt or died…is in no small part thanks to the heroic actions of those members of the public,” he stated, acknowledging their selfless bravery.
During sentencing at Southampton Crown Court, Judge William Mousley KC acknowledged Mahmoudi’s mental health struggles, explaining that his decision to discontinue medication had triggered the relapse. While this offered some context, Mahmoudi was ultimately sentenced to two years and six months in prison after admitting multiple charges.
Chowdhary, reflecting on the incident, publicly praised his team – Viktor, Mohamed, and Jamie – for their quick thinking and unwavering commitment to protecting the community. He expressed immense pride in their actions, stating they had not only embodied the principles of Limitless Martial Arts but had truly lived them.
