LEGEND LOST: Architectural Titan Calma Dies at 97!

Lorenzo “Lor” Calma, a pioneering figure who redefined modern Philippine architecture, passed away peacefully on January 27th at the age of 97. His passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy etched in minimalist lines and a profound respect for Filipino artistry.

His children, designer Lorena Calma and architect Eduardo Calma, remembered him not only for his architectural brilliance but for a remarkable generosity of spirit and the quiet warmth he extended to all who knew him. They spoke of an enduring legacy that fundamentally shaped the landscape of modern design in the Philippines.

Calma’s work was instantly recognizable for its elegant simplicity and innovative use of local materials. He seamlessly blended international modernism with the unique cultural context of the Philippines, creating spaces that were both timeless and distinctly Filipino.

Among his most iconic achievements were the interiors of the Manila International Airport and the Asian Development Bank, spaces that welcomed millions with a sense of understated sophistication. These projects weren’t merely buildings; they were statements about Filipino identity and design prowess.

Born in Pampanga on March 4, 1928, Calma was a true multidisciplinary artist. He wasn’t confined to a single medium, exploring architecture, sculpture, and furniture design with equal passion and skill.

He studied at the Mapua Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Planning, quickly becoming a leading voice in postwar Philippine design during the 1950s. Later, in 1967, he co-founded the Philippine School of Interior Design, nurturing a new generation of talent.

Throughout his illustrious career, Calma received numerous accolades, including the Most Outstanding Kapampangan in Arts and Architecture in 2010 and Outstanding Professional of the Year in Interior Design in 1997. These awards were a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence.

His firm, Lor Calma & Partners, continues his practice, guided by the principles he championed: restraint, meaning, and craftsmanship. They believe design should prioritize clarity, purpose, and respect – for materials, context, and, most importantly, people.

His nephew, architect Juan Carlo Calma, described him as a multifaceted artist with a discerning taste and a playful sense of humor. He was a champion of Filipino craftsmanship, always seeking to express the sensual beauty of local materials through bold yet restrained designs.

A wake was held at the Heritage Memorial Park, offering a final opportunity to pay respects to a man who left an indelible mark on the nation’s architectural heritage. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren, who carry forward his vision and legacy.
