Mark Hehir, a London bus driver, became an unlikely hero when a thief targeted a passenger on his route. A woman’s necklace was violently snatched, and without hesitation, Hehir gave chase, determined to recover the stolen item.
He successfully apprehended the thief and returned the necklace to the grateful woman. But the situation escalated when the thief, shockingly, re-boarded the bus, initiating a confrontation with Hehir.
Acting purely in self-defense, Hehir restrained the attacker until police arrived. However, his actions were met with an unexpected consequence: he was dismissed from his job by the bus company, accused of misconduct.
The company claimed Hehir’s pursuit and subsequent altercation brought the organization into disrepute and compromised passenger safety. He argued he acted instinctively, leaving the bus secured with the handbrake engaged and doors open.
But Hehir’s story reveals a deeper layer of courage and selflessness. Before this incident, he spent months volunteering on the Poland-Ukraine border following the Russian invasion in 2022.
Working independently, he transported both people and vital supplies across the border, operating under strict security protocols where even phone use was prohibited. He witnessed a constant stream of soldiers heading to the front lines.
Despite being cleared of wrongdoing by police – a report confirming his use of force was proportionate and necessary – the tribunal upheld his dismissal. Questions lingered about the attacker’s intentions upon returning to the bus.
An operations manager suggested the man only intended to apologize, and deemed the restraint “excessive.” The tribunal ultimately sided with the company, stating their belief in Hehir’s misconduct was “reasonable.”
The decision sparked public outrage, with many calling for Hehir’s reinstatement and praising his bravery. A petition launched by a Shadow Justice Minister has gained momentum, demanding he receive the recognition he deserves.
The case highlights a troubling question: should a man be punished for instinctively defending a passenger and recovering stolen property, even if it means risking his own safety and ultimately, his livelihood?
