A wave of Israeli strikes reverberated across Gaza on Saturday, initiated in response to alleged breaches of the fragile ceasefire. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported identifying eight individuals emerging from underground infrastructure in eastern Rafah, characterizing them as militants.
The IDF focused its attacks on key Hamas and Islamic Jihad commanders, alongside other militants, and targeted a significant weapons storage facility. Further strikes dismantled a Hamas weapons manufacturing site and two launch positions located in central Gaza, intensifying the military response.
Hospitals within Gaza, operating under Hamas control, reported a grim tally of at least 30 Palestinian deaths resulting from the strikes. Tragically, hospital officials confirmed the inclusion of civilians among the casualties, including two women and six children from separate families.
A direct hit on a police station in Gaza City claimed the lives of at least 14 individuals and injured numerous others, according to Shifa Hospital director Mohamed Abu Selmiya. The escalating violence underscored the precarious nature of the truce.
These strikes followed accusations leveled by Israel against Hamas for violating the ceasefire agreement. While an Israeli military official confirmed the response to the violations, specific details regarding targeted individuals remained undisclosed.
The renewed hostilities occurred just one day before the anticipated reopening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, a crucial step in the second phase of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire. This phase promised limited border access, demilitarization efforts, and discussions concerning Gaza’s future governance.
Israel has consistently expressed concerns about the Rafah crossing serving as a conduit for Hamas weapons smuggling, insisting that any reopening would be contingent upon robust security arrangements, aligning with elements of a previously proposed peace plan.
Beyond Gaza, the IDF also reported striking Hezbollah infrastructure and engineering vehicles in southern Lebanon, alleging attempts to rebuild militant infrastructure in violation of existing agreements. This demonstrated a broader regional response to perceived threats.
In a surprising acknowledgement, a senior Israeli military official indicated that the IDF largely corroborates the overall death toll reported by the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry. Estimates suggest approximately 70,000 Gazans have perished during the conflict, which began with the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
The Gaza Health Ministry currently reports 71,667 deaths, including over 450 since the ceasefire began on October 10th. Israeli officials cautioned that this figure may be incomplete, as it doesn’t account for bodies believed to remain trapped under rubble.
Since the ceasefire’s inception on October 10th, the Gaza Health Ministry has recorded 509 Palestinian deaths attributed to Israeli fire. The situation remains volatile and deeply concerning for civilians on both sides.
On Thursday, Israel returned the bodies of 15 Palestinians, following the recovery of the last Israeli hostage. This transfer concluded the initial phase of hostage-detainee exchanges under the ceasefire agreement, marking a somber end to that particular aspect of the negotiations.
